The Cardiology book is the first book released in the Pharmacotherapy Self-Assessment Program, Sixth Edition (PSAP-VI), series. PSAP-VI, an 11-book series, is a concise, comprehensive resource that gives readers a thorough understanding of recent drug therapy advances.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, making the PSAP-VI Cardiology book a “must read” for every clinical pharmacist. Separated into three modules, the book comprehensively addresses advancement in the pharmacotherapy of acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions.

The Cardiology modules present content that has been substantially expanded from previous editions of PSAP. Individual chapter topics include hypertension: evidence-based updates and clinical controversies; dyslipidemias: therapeutic advances; drug-induced cardiac diseases; acute coronary syndromes: evolving practices; acute heart failure and cardiogenic shock; cardiac transplantation; ischemic stroke; chronic stable angina: management and prevention of future cardiovascular events; chronic heart failure management; arrhythmias management: an evidence-based update; and peripheral arterial disease.

Program Goals and Target Audience

PSAP-VI is a series of continuing education activities for home study, designed to provide pharmacists with new, previously unpublished material on contemporary topics related to pharmacotherapy. PSAP-VI is not a textbook, nor does it provide overall reviews of topics. Rather, the series presents the latest information on specific topics. The program allows pharmacists to develop and assess their knowledge in the science and application of pharmacotherapy and to enhance their educational competence in this specialty, with an emphasis on providing quality pharmaceutical care. PSAP-VI will:

  • Assist other structured programs (e.g., staff development, external Pharm.D., postgraduate training programs) in upgrading the clinical competence of clinical pharmacy generalists;
  • Assist advanced-level clinical practitioners and pharmacotherapy specialists in maintaining their clinical competence; and
  • Assist pharmacotherapy specialists in meeting qualifications for recertification.
Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit
ACPE

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The number of continuing education (CE) contact hours earned for successfully completing the PSAP post test varies with each book. Continuing pharmacy education credit for each PSAP-VI book is available for 3 years after the date of release.

To receive Continuing Pharmacy Education credit for a PSAP-VI module, the post test for that module must be completed online and submitted for scoring. Continuing pharmacy education credit is awarded for test scores of 50% or greater. The answers to each continuing education post test are made available in electronic format to participants after they complete the test. After submitting a PSAP-VI post test, re-enter the online education center and click on the test you submitted. You will see your test with correct and incorrect answers identified. You will also see a hyperlink to a PDF file with the correct answers and explanations for that test. Continuing education statements of credit are processed and mailed within 10 business days of receipt of an ACPE test (see below for processing times for BCPS tests). The exception to this 10-day processing is the 3-month period after a book is released. Statements of ACPE credit are mailed after the BCPS tests have been processed.

To receive detailed answers to PSAP-VI questions without submitting a continuing education test, fill out the online waiver form for that book. By completing this form, you waive the opportunity to receive CE credit for that book. Once you submit the waiver, you will be redirected to a PDF with the answers to the post test you waived. Waiver statements will be processed and mailed within 10 business days of receiving the waiver form.

Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) Recertification Continuing Education

Subscribers submitting a PSAP-VI post test for BCPS recertification credit have a 3-month window of opportunity (the period after the release of the book) to submit the post test for recertification. Refer to the first page of each print and online book for the deadline to submit online tests for CE credit toward BCPS recertification.

Tests submitted for BCPS recertification credit will be processed and results mailed within 60 days of the published due date. Only completed tests are eligible for credit; no partial or incomplete tests will be processed. The passing point for BCPS recertification credit is based on a statistical analysis of the test results for each book. If you receive a passing score, that information will be forwarded to BPS and a statement of continuing pharmacy education/BCPS recertification credit will be sent to you.
