Breakthrough pain in cancer patients is under-recognized and undertreated, leading to unnecessary patient suffering and high healthcare costs. A number of barriers related to both healthcare professionals and patients have been attributed to the lack of diagnosis and treatment. Pharmacists are integral members of the pain management team, so they require the latest information on breakthrough pain and its treatment in order to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to help optimize treatment outcomes.
In this program, the pathophysiology and characteristics of breakthrough pain, its prevalence, and the negative impact on cancer patients will be reviewed. In addition, the pharmacokinetics of opioids currently used to treat cancer pain and characteristics of ideal breakthrough pain treatments will be explored. Moreover, the need for new therapeutic options and data supporting their use will be discussed. Pharmacoeconomic considerations when treating patients with breakthrough pain, and ways to improve collaboration with other members of the pain management team, will also be assessed.
This symposium is your compass for navigating your career in the right direction.
