Program Goals

The Pharmacotherapy Review Program for Advanced Clinical Pharmacy Practice is designed to help pharmacists who are preparing for the Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification examination in Pharmacotherapy as well as those seeking a general review and refresher on pharmacotherapeutics and clinical skills.

Program goals are to:

  1. present a high-quality, up-to-date overview of pharmacotherapeutics;
  2. provide a framework to help participants prepare for the pharmacotherapy specialty certification examination; and
  3. engage participants in an interactive, case-based learning experience to advance the clinical judgment and problem-solving skills required in clinical practice.
Target Audience

Pharmacists providing patient care and those planning on obtaining pharmacotherapy board certification should attend this program.

Program Agenda and Pre-program Reading Materials

Participants should print the chapters and bring them to the live program for their reference during the live program.

Program Content and Format

The 3-day live program will cover the following three areas:

  1. Patient-specific pharmacotherapy
  2. Biostatistics and literature evaluation
  3. Systems and population-based pharmacotherapy

Faculty experts will present most recent updates on the following pharmacotherapeutic topics:

  • Biostatistics and Clinical Trials
  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Nephrology
  • Pulmonary Diseases

The live program will focus on the application of knowledge and will employ various learning activities and case scenarios to facilitate oral discussion of the topics. The goal is to exemplify application of knowledge and clinical judgment as required in clinical practice.

Program registrants will receive a course book that includes reviews of the material to be covered and the learning activities to be completed during the live sessions.

G. Robert DeYoung, Pharm.D., BCPS has been practicing clinical and health system–related pharmacy for 18 years. Dr. DeYoung obtained his B.S. in Pharmacy from Ferris State University. After obtaining a Pharm.D. degree at the University of Washington and completing a pharmacy residency at the University of Washington and Harborview medical centers, Dr. DeYoung worked as an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice for the College of Pharmacy at Ferris State University. Dr. DeYoung has been credentialed as a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) through the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties since 1993. For the past 10 years, he has worked with Advantage Health Physician Network and Saint Mary’s Health Care in Grand Rapids as a clinical pharmacist in ambulatory care. Dr. DeYoung has presented often on topics such as the pharmacotherapy of asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), other respiratory disorders, and vaccines, as well as topics related to the use of antibiotics. In addition, he has presented and published materials on the roles of evidence-based medicine, pharmacotherapy literature evaluation, and biostatistics in optimizing drug therapies.

Brian Hemstreet, Pharm.D., BCPS is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy. He received both his Bachelor of Pharmacy (1996) and Doctor of Pharmacy (1998) degrees from Albany College of Pharmacy. He then completed residencies in pharmacy practice and adult internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1998-2000. His current area of clinical practice is adult internal medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital, where he serves as a member of a multidisciplinary inpatient medical team. His areas of interest in research and scholarly activity include gastroenterology and medication safety in the hospital setting.

Alan Lau, Pharm.D. is Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Director of International Clinical Pharmacy Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees at the State University of New York at Buffalo and then completed a clinical pharmacy residency at UIC. He pioneered the development of clinical pharmacy services for renal failure patients on dialysis. Dr. Lau had obtained many research grants for clinical and laboratory research in renal pharmacotherapeutics and clinical pharmacology, with a recent focus on mineral and bone disorder in chronic kidney disease. He has published many research papers and book chapters, including chapters in the textbooks Pharmacotherapy, Applied Therapeutics - The Clinical Use of Drugs and Basic Skills in Interpreting Laboratory Data.. Dr. Lau was one of the founding members of the Nephrology Practice and Research Network of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. In addition, he had served on the Board of Director and as Chairman of the Renal Scientific Section in the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Dr. Lau has been elected to be vice-chairman of the Nephrology/Urology Expert Committee of United States Pharmacopeia (USP) in 2007. In 2010, he has been elected as a Distinguished Practitioner to the National Academies of Practice in Pharmacy. In 2011, Dr. Lau was appointed by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) to be Professional Development Associate – International Programs. Dr. Lau has been invited to give lectures on pharmacotherapy and clinical pharmacy service development in many countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Malta.

Zachary A. Stacy, Pharm.D., BCPS, is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He earned his Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and biology from Blackburn College and his Masters in Chemistry degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. Dr. Stacy completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and a specialty residency in internal medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri. He is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist. He maintains a clinical practice on the internal medicine and cardiology services at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield. Dr. Stacy has received several teaching awards including the 2005 Excellence in Clinical Precepting Award, the 2009 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award, and the 2009 Joe E. Haberle Outstanding Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Stacy’s primary research interests include the prevention of venous thromboembolism and the management of peripheral arterial disease. He has authored numerous articles, reviews, and book chapters on these topics and frequently provides presentations at state and national conferences.

Program Registration

The early registration fee for Hong Kong Hospital Authority pharmacists is US $200. The early registration fee for all other pharmacists is US $400. The late registration fee (registrations received after August 6) is US $250 for Hong Kong Hospital Authority pharmacists and US $450 for all other pharmacists.
