The program, accredited by ASHP, is a one-year PGY-1 Residency with an emphasis on Pharmaceutical Care. Accredited since 1977, the program offers the opportunity to participate in the ongoing development and implementation of innovative clinical pharmacy services. Opportunities allow the resident to:
• Gain experience and develop clinical skills through problem identification and solution in a large pharmacy department of a teaching hospital
• Participate in ward rounds and pharmacy run clinics
• Develop and assess clinical plans through participation in weekly continuity clinic with primary provider
• Promote rational therapeutics through conduction of drug usage evaluations
• Develop communication skills by presenting formal in-services and drug reviews, publishing newsletters, and providing drug information and patient consultations
• Gain experience in research through designing, conducting and publishing a major project
• Design a schedule to place emphasis on the resident’s areas of interest

Residents are offered a multifaceted exposure to all areas of hospital pharmacy practice and opportunities to develop personal interest areas. Learning experiences may be structured to emphasize the resident’s interests. This includes repeating core rotations if desired.One of the primary objectives of the Medical Center is the training of health care professionals. The Pharmacy Service provides clerkship and externship training for Pharm.D. students from Oregon State University, University of the Pacific and Pacific University. The Resident serves as a preceptor and participates in the training of some of these students. There are also opportunities to give pharmacotherapy lectures at the OSU College of Pharmacy at OHSU.
