Series Overview

From Theory to Practice: Clinical Reasoning Series in Pediatric Pharmacy is one component of the professional development program developed by ACCP and approved for the recertification of the Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialist (BCPPS).

This educational series explores cutting-edge, contemporary therapeutic topics, and demonstrates scientifically sound clinical reasoning and decision-making. It employs learning activities designed to advance the participants’ skills and abilities to critically evaluate the scientific evidence and to effectively incorporate into daily practice significant findings that lead to effective and safe patient care.

Program Content

“The ABC’s of Pediatric Epilepsy: From Status Epilepticus to Long-term Seizure Management” will evaluate pharmacologic treatment options for patients who present in status epilepticus and examine the efficacy and toxicities of the oral antiepileptic medications used to treat various pediatric epilepsy syndromes. Attendees will gain skills in evaluating the published literature concerning the management of pediatric epilepsy and in designing an individualized, evidence- based therapeutic plan for managing patients with complex pediatric epilepsy. The program will also examine treatment options for patients with pharmacoresistent epilepsy and possible alternative therapeutic options for seizure control.

Target Audience and Program Goals

Clinical pharmacists, BCPPSs providing care to patients with pediatric epilepsy.

At the conclusion of the program, the participant should be able to:

  1. Indicate and critically evaluate pharmacological treatment options for patients who present in status epilepticus.
  2. Compare and contrast the efficacy and toxicities of oral antiepileptic medications utilized for the treatment of various pediatric epilepsy syndromes.
  3. Evaluate published literature concerning the management of pediatric epilepsy.
  4. Identify pharmacoresistant epileptic patients and indicate possible alternative therapeutic options for seizure control.
  5. Design an individualized, evidence-based therapeutic plan for managing patients with complex pediatric epilepsy.
Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit

ACPE

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

This is an application-based activity; Activity Number: 0217-0000-16-150-H01-P.

To earn continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit and to receive your continuing pharmacy education statement of credit for this activity, participants must successfully complete a Web-based posttest by October 23, 2019. Partial credit is not available for this activity.

BCPPS Specialty Recertification Credit

To be eligible for 6.0 CPE hours of recertification credit, BCPPSs must attend all 6.0 contact hours of live programming and successfully complete a Web-based posttest by November 30, 2016. Partial credit is not available for this activity.

ACCP, as the official provider approved by BPS, will record and report recertification credit earned for this activity directly to BPS.
