Leadership and Management Certificate Program Graduates
Graduates of the Leadership and Management Certificate Program, 2019 ACCP Annual Meeting

The ACCP Leadership and Management Certificate Program is an educational program aimed at developing leadership and management abilities. The curriculum is designed for those who are currently in leadership or management positions or who aspire to pursue leadership positions in the future. The program will provide official ACCP recognition to leaders and managers who complete the program requirements.

Pharmacy directors, deans, department heads, and program directors are encouraged to integrate the Leadership and Management Academy with their own professional development efforts for management staff, faculty, and others who will benefit from enhanced leadership and management skills.

Syllabus  

Curriculum

The Leadership and Management Certificate Program curriculum includes 18.0 hours of core modules and 8.0 hours of elective programming. Elective opportunities provide instruction to meet the leadership or management needs of individual participants. Some electives will focus on a contemporary leadership approach or leadership text, while other electives will address the needs of specific leadership positions (e.g., the clinical manager, the pharmacy department head and/or associate/assistant head, the department chair/vice chair). The core modules consist of the following:

  • Required Live Modules (In-Person [Annual Meeting] or Virtual)
    • Module 1: Leadership Primers I & II (6.0 hours)
      Offered in conjunction with ACCP Annual Meeting
    • Module 2: Personal Leadership Development (4.0 hours)
      Offered in conjunction with ACCP Annual Meeting
    • Module 3: Interpersonal Leadership Development (4.0 hours)
      Delivered during the virtual Academy programming
    • Module 4: Attributes of a Leader (4.0 hours)
      Delivered during the virtual Academy programming
  • Electives (minimum of 8.0 hours)

A total of 26.0 hours is required to complete the program. Each participant will be given 2 years to complete the certificate program from the date of enrollment.

Program Completion Deadline
The ACCP Academy requires all enrollees to complete the program within two years enrollment in the certificate program. Note, there is no prerequisite requirement for this program, and required modules can be taken in any order.

Certificate Requirements

To qualify for graduation, Leadership and Management Certificate Program participants must complete required reading, 18.0 hours of required modules and 8.0 hours of electives.

In addition, each participant must develop and maintain an online electronic portfolio via the online system developed and maintained by ACCP. The electronic portfolio will serve as the guiding and monitoring tool for professional advancement over the course of the program. Portfolio development will be initiated following the completion of the Module 1: Leadership Primers I & II. Completion of the assigned portfolio activities will be required within six months of taking the module. All portfolio assignments must be completed by August 1st of the year intended for graduation.

One-on-one mentoring is among the most effective strategies to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values of a leader. Therefore, each participant will be asked to identify a personal mentor (preferably from his or her institution, if possible) with whom he or she will meet throughout the program. Enrollment and Program Costs

To enroll in the ACCP Academy Leadership and Management Certificate Program, apply online or download the application form. Fees for the ACCP Academy Leadership and Management Certificate Program have been established with today's institutional budgets in mind. A one-time application fee of $399.95 for members and $699.95 for nonmembers (to offset expenses for online portfolio maintenance) will be charged upon enrollment in the program. Your enrollment fee includes access to all programming requirements virtually including the prerequisite modules, modules 1, 2, and 3, and electives. All programming will be delivered live via Zoom and recordings made available to participants in your ACCP Account.

Three-Month Grace Period: Required and elective programming completed three months before enrollment, will apply towards the certificate.

Faculty

Robert E. Smith, Pharm.D. (Director)

Robert E. Smith, Pharm.D.

Robert E. Smith is a professor emeritus at the Harrison School of Pharmacy, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama. He received his B.A. degree from Arizona State University and his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Southern California. On graduation, Smith spent 2 years in the U.S. Public Health Service, Indian Health Service at Crow Agency, Montana.

In 1971, Smith joined the faculty at Wayne State University College of Pharmacy in Detroit, Michigan. After 7 years at Wayne State University, he served as a faculty member, department chair, and assistant dean at Creighton University School of Pharmacy. In 1989, he was appointed as the vice president for academic affairs and dean at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where he served until 1995. After a 1-year sabbatical at AACP, Smith accepted his last academic position at Auburn University, from which he retired in 2012.

Dr. Smith was elected as president-elect (1998–1999) and president (1999–2000) of AACP. He continues to be involved in academic pharmacy as an invited speaker and consultant on personal, professional and academic leadership, strategic planning, and pedagogical and curricular change.

Debbie C. Byrd, Pharm.D.

Dr. Debbie C. Byrd has served as Dean of East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy since 2016. Previous administrative leadership experience includes roles as Associate Dean for Professional Affairs and Assistant Dean for a new distance education campus, Director of Experiential Learning, Director for Primary Care and Rural Primary Care Residency Programs, and she was elected Chair of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Section of Teachers of Pharmacy Practice. A professor of Pharmacy Practice, Dr. Byrd’s practice experience includes development of new patient care services for underserved Family Medicine patients at sites including a private community hospital, rural mobile health clinic, rural private practice, and a large academic medical center. Honored as a Preceptor of Excellence, her leadership in education includes curricular redesign, faculty orientation and mentoring programs, formal resident teaching and learning program activities, and an academia and leadership APPE. Dr. Byrd is a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy and completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, now Regional One Health, followed by a Primary Care Specialty Residency at the National Institutes of Health. She began the first ten years of her academic career at Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy, followed by another decade at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Byrd was a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist for 21 years, and she earned an MBA from Tennessee Tech University in 2015. Dr. Byrd is a graduate of Harvard’s Graduate School of Education Management Development Program and the AACP Academic Leadership Fellows Program. She and her husband, Robert, have been married for over three decades, and they are very proud of their sons, Noah and Nathan.

Peter D. Hurd, Ph.D.

Peter D. Hurd, Ph.D.

Dr. Peter D. Hurd is Professor Emeritus in Pharmacy Administration and retired Department Chair of Pharmaceutical and Administrative Sciences at St. Louis College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his Ph.D. in Social and Administrative Pharmacy from the University of Minnesota, a M.S. in Social Psychology from Duke University, and an A.B. in Psychology from Dartmouth College. He is currently one of the regular presenters at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Leadership Academy. At the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Dr. Hurd was also chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subjects research, faculty athletic representative for the College’s intercollegiate sports program, and one of the faculty advisors for the annual Student Research Symposium.

Dr. Hurd’s research interests include public health, leadership/management, program assessment in education, health literacy, and psychosocial aspects of medication use. His most recent teaching included courses in public health, health systems management, and research methods. He is one of three editors of a book linking public health and pharmacy, “Introduction to Public Health in Pharmacy” with Ardis Hanson and Bruce L Levin, which is now in its second edition. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He has presented a number of programs that have used leadership principles to find the strengths of others, maximize performance, improve outcomes through effective planning, and manage change through vision and leadership.

Leigh Ann Ross, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS

Leigh Ann Ross, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS

Dr. Leigh Ann Ross is Dean and Professor at Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy (AUHCOP). Prior to joining Auburn University, she served as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy UMSOP, Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, and Research Professor in the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She previously served as the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at UMSOP. Dr. Ross also worked with the John D. Bower School of Population Health at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as a Professor in the Department of Population Health Science.

Dr. Ross received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and a Doctor of Pharmacy from Ole Miss. She completed a Primary Care Pharmacy Residency at UMMC. She joined the UMSOP faculty in 1999, where she led practice initiatives to implement medication management services at the Medical Center and in communities through UM’s Community-Based Research Program. In addition to her work in pharmacy, Dr. Ross completed a 2-year Congressional Fellowship in the Office of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran where she served as policy advisor on health care, labor, housing, and economic development. Dr. Ross has been actively involved in professional organizations at a state and national level, serving as President of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), Member of the ACCP Board of Regents, Chair of the ACCP Political Action Committee Governing Council, and Chair of Pharmacotherapy Publications, Inc. Board of Directors, which provides oversight for the journals Pharmacotherapy and JACCP. She also served as Chair of the American Association College of Pharmacy (ACCP) Pharmacy Practice Section. Dr. Ross is Past President of the Mississippi Pharmacists Association and the Mississippi Biotechnology Association. She is a Fellow of ACCP, ASHP, APhA, and the National Academies of Practice.
