Position Description
Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines (MMC – DSM) is currently seeking applicants for a clinical pharmacist position specializing in Emergency Medicine. Pharmacists in the ED at MMC – DSM are extremely hands-on and are relied upon as an essential member of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team. EM Pharmacists are responsible for attending all medical and traumatic resuscitations and emergencies, assisting with procedural sedation and RSI, providing drug therapy consultation, reviewing medication orders, facilitating medication distribution, assisting with medication administration, performing culture follow-up activities under a collaborative practice agreement, answering drug information questions, and other tasks as necessary. EM Pharmacists respond to formal alerts within the ED for STEMI, stroke, trauma, and sepsis providing therapeutic consultation and facilitating prompt medication administration.

In addition to clinical responsibilities EM Pharmacists assist with order set and protocol development, multi-disciplinary education, participate in ED related committees and work groups, and precept the PGY2 EM resident, PGY1 residents, and take occasional PharmD students. Dedicated medication reconciliation technicians complete all medication histories for patients being admitted from the ED allowing EM Pharmacists to focus on clinical activities.

Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines is a 656-bed community teaching hospital located in Iowa’s capitol city and is one of the Midwest’s largest referral centers, offering a variety of specialty services that are unique to Iowa and the region. It has a 44-bed Adult and 12-bed Pediatric Emergency Department with approximately 70,000 patient visits annually. MMC – DSM is a Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Accredited Chest Pain Center, Primary Stroke Center, and has medical residency programs in surgery, internal medicine, and family medicine. MMC – DSM is a member of the Mercy Health Network (MHN) and is part of the Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) healthcare organization.

Clinical Pharmacist position requirements include:
• Pharmacy degree (BS or PharmD) from an ACPE approved College of Pharmacy
• Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency or ≥1 year of acute care experience primarily in ED or Critical Care
• Completion of PGY-2 Emergency Medicine or Critical Care Pharmacy Residency strongly desired
• Licensed, or eligible for pharmacist licensure in Iowa
• Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification preferred
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS or obtain within 3 months of hire
