Position Description
Witt/Kieffer has been retained by Lifespan to assist in their recruitment efforts for their next Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO.)

Lifespan is seeking an operationally experienced Pharmacy leader with a strong focus on system integration and executive leadership to lead the division of Pharmacy Services. The CPO provides leadership and direction for the strategic, operational, clinical, financial and administrative functions associated with pharmacy services. The pharmacy executive works closely with senior leaders across the health system in support and advancement of pharmacy services. The CPO plans, organizes and manages overall pharmacy operations for Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Bradley Hospital, Newport Hospital, Gateway, Lifespan Physician Group (LPG) and Lifespan Pharmacy, LLC. This leader has administrative responsibility for all aspects of the health-system pharmacy management for Lifespan, including clinical, retail, ambulatory care, transitions of care, academics, research, regulatory readiness, medication safety, quality, procurement, contracting, clinical intelligence, strategic planning, and information technology. The CPO coordinates and oversees a multi-hospital Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and a Federal 340B Program. The CPO also serves as President for Lifespan Pharmacy, LLC.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President of Physician Affairs, the Chief Pharmacy Officer will have responsibility for leading all aspects of pharmacy strategy, innovation and operations Lifespan-wide. approximately $213 million and is home to some 300 staff members, including clinical pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other staff supporting the clinical interface with patients and clinicians, along with the dispensing and distribution functions. The organization drug spend is approximately $182M, more than $52M of which is from the Cancer Center. There are 8 direct reports to this position, including managers and leaders at each hospital site. Pharmacy technicians within Lifespan are unionized through the Teamsters union.

Lifespan, Rhode Island's first health system, was founded in 1994 by Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. A comprehensive, integrated, academic health system affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Lifespan's present partners also include Rhode Island Hospital's pediatric division, Hasbro Children's Hospital; Bradley Hospital; Newport Hospital; and Gateway Healthcare. A not-for-profit organization, Lifespan is overseen by a board of volunteer community leaders who are guided by its mission: Delivering health with care.

The ideal candidate will be a PharmD and have considerable experience in a multi-site provider organization, ideally one with either a teaching or academic mission. It will take seven plus years of senior Pharmacy department leadership experience to appreciate the operational complexity of the organization. A track record of success in a matrixed environment is critical. One must also have experience leading large numbers of professional and support staff in multiple locations.
