Position Description
MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is currently seeking applicants for the Manager of Clinical Pharmacy Services. This position is responsible for a diverse range of job functions. The Clinical Manager provides first line management and leadership of clinical pharmacy activities & programs for MercyOne Des Moines as well as affiliated acute care facilities. MercyOne’s pharmacy department has a long history of strong clinical practice provided by a team of decentralized clinical staff pharmacists. The staff is supported by an experienced group of pharmacy specialists in the following areas: Adult Critical Care, Cardiology, Emergency Department, Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine, Oncology and Pediatrics.

MercyOne’s pharmacy program also includes a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, as well as, two PGY2 residency programs in Emergency Medicine and Infectious Diseases. The pharmacy manager provides overall leadership for the residencies with delegation of day-to-day needs to Residency Program Directors.

The Clinical Pharmacy Manager is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs as they apply to medication-related technologies, information systems, safe medication management practices, cost containment, regulatory oversight and compliance, and operational excellence activities.

In this role, they will also support and collaborate with the Division Director of Pharmacy, CommonSpirit Health and Iowa Division pharmacy leaders, key medical staff physicians, and hospital leadership.

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is a 656-bed community teaching hospital located in Iowa’s capitol city and is one of the Midwest’s largest referral centers, offering a variety of specialty services that are unique to Iowa and the region. MercyOne is a Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Accredited Chest Pain Center, Primary Stroke Center, and has medical residency programs in surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, and psychiatry. MercyOne Des Moines is a member of the Mercy Health Network and is part of the CommonSpirit Health organization (formerly Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) which has merged with Dignity Health).

Clinical Manager position requirements:
• Pharmacy degree (BS or Pharm.D.) from an ACPE approved College of Pharmacy.
• Residency (accredited by ASHP) or equivalent experience preferred.
• Licensed, or eligible for licensure, pharmacist in Iowa.
• Five years experience in hospital pharmacy preferred.
• Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification preferred

Essential Functions:
• Collaborates and contributes to CommonSpirit national pharmacy & medication use initiatives as a member of the Pharmacy Leadership Council.
• With the assistance of the Director of Pharmacy, implements, evaluates and optimizes national pharmacy & medication use initiatives which are pertinent to the Iowa Division.
• With the assistance of the Director of Pharmacy and Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee chairperson, organizes and delegates all P&T meetings and related activities.
• Maintains overall oversight & responsibility of/for MercyOne Des Moines Pharmacy Clinical Specialists and Residency Program Directors.
• With the assistance of the Director of Pharmacy, hires, coordinates training of, and supervises professional staff in areas of responsibility (includes Iowa Division Clinical Pharmacy Specialists).
Responsible for scheduling, goal-setting, evaluation of, and payroll processing for direct reports.
• Acts as primary clinical pharmacy liaison for CommonSpirit Iowa Division entities outside of current scope of responsibilities (example: MercyOne Clinic sites/operations)
• Assists in preparing and managing budget for assigned areas of responsibility.
• Coordinates services within area of responsibility and works with other departments or areas within the pharmacy to resolve problems.
• Maintains knowledge of and complies with applicable federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations.
