Clinical Staff Pharmacist for Pediatrics, Adult Critical Care and/or Emergency Medicine

Position Description
MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is currently seeking applicants for 2 clinical staff pharmacist positions specializing in Pediatrics, Adult Critical Care or Emergency Medicine. Candidates ideally have experience in two of the three clinical areas being recruited for to allow for cross-coverage and flexible staffing.

Pediatric pharmacists oversee medication management for patients within a 44 bed Level III NICU, a 9 bed PICU, and a 22 bed in-patient pediatric unit. Pharmacists participate in weekday multidisciplinary care rounds in PICU and NICU, complete pharmacokinetic and TPN consults, provide drug therapy consultation, respond to drug information questions, conduct prospective profile reviews, complete decentralized order verification, facilitate medication distribution, and participate in pediatric medical emergencies.

Critical Care pharmacists are decentralized in each of the three adult units: Cardiac-Medical ICU (20 beds), Cardiac-Surgical ICU (16 beds), and Neuro-Trauma-Medical ICU (16 beds). Pharmacists participate in weekday multidisciplinary care rounds for their respective unit, perform pharmacokinetic, warfarin, and TPN consults, respond to medical emergencies and sepsis alerts throughout the hospital, provide drug therapy consultation, complete decentralized order verification, and other tasks as necessary.

Emergency Medicine pharmacists are responsible for a 44-bed Adult and 12-bed Pediatric Emergency Department with approximately 70,000 patient visits annually. Pharmacists in the ED are extremely hands-on and are relied upon as an essential member of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team. EM Pharmacists attend all medical and traumatic resuscitations and emergencies, assist with procedural sedation and RSI, provide drug therapy consultation, complete prospective order verification, facilitate medication distribution, assist with medication administration, perform culture follow-up activities under a collaborative practice agreement, answer drug information questions, and other tasks as necessary. EM Pharmacists respond to formal alerts within the ED for STEMI, stroke, trauma, and sepsis providing therapeutic consultation and facilitating prompt medication administration.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, pharmacists may assist with order set and protocol development, multidisciplinary education, participate in pharmacy and/or multidisciplinary committees and work groups, and help precept PGY2 EM and ID residents, PGY1 residents, and take occasional PharmD students.

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is a 656-bed community teaching hospital located in Iowa’s capitol city and is one of the Midwest’s largest referral centers, offering a variety of specialty services that are unique to Iowa and the region. MercyOne – DSM is a Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Accredited Chest Pain Center, Primary Stroke Center, and has medical residency programs in surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, and psychiatry. MercyOne – DSM is a member of the MercyOne Network and is part of the CommonSpirit Health Organiziation (formerly Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) which has merged with Dignity Health).

Clinical Pharmacist position requirements include:
• Pharmacy degree (BS or PharmD) from an ACPE approved College of Pharmacy
• Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency or ≥1 year of acute care experience primarily in Pediatrics, Critical Care, and/or Emergency Medicine
• Completion of PGY-2 Pediatrics, Critical Care, or Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency strongly desired
• Licensed, or eligible for pharmacist licensure in Iowa
• Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification preferred
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS or obtain within 3 months of hire
