Position Description
Wingate University, a comprehensive, independent and growing university near Charlotte, NC, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Pharmacy. The School seeks an inspiring leader who will foster and encourage an environment of innovation, collaboration and engagement in their faculty, staff and students. As the next leader of a faculty who is evaluating and preparing to modernize its curriculum, the Dean must have a vision for positioning the School to remain successful in its mission to recruit and produce innovative thinkers and problem solvers and be agile enough to proactively adapt to the changing landscape of Pharmacy education.

The Dean is a member of the Provost’s Council and is expected to help advance the University mission. The Dean reports to the Provost and is responsible for all academic and operational aspects of the School. These include direct responsibility for or oversight of the School budget and its management, physical plant, human resources (recruiting, hiring, development and advancement), curriculum (didactic and clinical), and student services. The Dean is also the steward of the School of Pharmacy managed endowment fund.

Candidates must have a PharmD and/or PhD and be eligible for faculty appointment at the rank of Professor. The ideal candidate will have a successful record of scholarship, leadership and administrative experience within a college or school of pharmacy. Exceptional communication skills, financial acumen, and ability to actively collaborate with the Office of Advancement on fundraising are essential. Demonstrated excellence in teaching, experience with curricular revision and innovative ideas about instruction for students with increasingly diverse learning styles and backgrounds are also highly desirable qualities.

Admitting its charter class in 2003, Wingate University School of Pharmacy currently has an enrollment of approximately 300 professional students pursuing their Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The School has 40 full time faculty and 10 staff across two campuses. The Wingate Campus houses the majority of the students and faculty while a satellite campus in Hendersonville, NC supports our efforts to reach the underserved in western North Carolina. In addition to the Wingate/Charlotte and Hendersonville/Asheville regions, students complete rotations during their fourth professional year in regional zones based in Hickory, Wilmington and Winston-Salem, NC.

The School is part of The Levine College of Health Sciences which also offers the Masters in Physician Assistant Studies, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. Nearly one-in-five Wingate undergraduate students has declared one of the on-campus health science programs as their major and 60 percent of graduate students are enrolled in health sciences. Interprofessional education (IPE) is already in place with these programs and continues to expand. In addition, a formal IPE agreement is in place with Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston Salem, NC.

Wingate University, whose guiding tenets are faith, knowledge and service, serves more than 3,600 students across three campuses in North Carolina. Founded in 1896, the University offers 37 undergraduate majors as well as six master’s degree and four doctoral degree programs. Wingate is home to the Cannon College of Arts and Sciences, the Levine College of Health Sciences, the Byrum School of Business, and the College of Professional Studies. Wingate has twice been recognized by the Chronicle of Higher Education as a “Great College to Work For.”

The proximity of Wingate University to the thriving Charlotte area offers many opportunities for individuals and families alike. Restaurants, shopping, hiking, outdoor sports and other entertainment options are unique and plentiful. Charlotte is home to the U.S. National Whitewater Center, the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, a AA baseball team, the Charlotte Knights, and hosts a variety of national sports tournaments through the year. Charlotte is also home to a vibrant arts and cultural community including several art galleries, museums, Charlotte Symphony, and Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Regionally the area offers easy access to the Blue Ridge Mountains as well as some of the most popular beaches and lighthouses on the east coast.
