Available for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0217-0000-24-135-L08-PActivity Type: A Knowledge-Based ActivityThere are a variety of pharmacogenetic testing reports that include recommendations for personalizing medications commonly used for pain management, including opioids, NSAIDs, and antidepressants. The evidence base for these recommendations provided by laboratory reports can be variable, which can create confusion for pharmacists when applying these results to patient prescribing decisions. The goals of this session are to (1) explore the evidence for the clinical utility of personalizing pain management treatment for commonly tested pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic pharmacogenes, (2) review considerations for interpreting pharmacogenetic test reports in the context of this evidence, and (3) discuss existing limitations of applying pharmacogenetics in pain management.
Learning Objectives1. Review clinical guidelines for pharmacogenetic-guided pain management.
2. Discuss evidence for the clinical utility of pharmacogenetic-guided pain management.
3. Explain pharmacogenetic test reports in the context of pain management.
4. Recognize limitations of pharmacogenetic testing for pain management.
