Specific topics will include 1) a discussion of the historical and emerging pharmacologic targets in migraine acute and prophylactic treatment, 2) a review of current guideline recommendations and evidence describing the use of traditional acute and prophylactic migraine therapies and 3) evidence-based recommendations regarding the use of novel medication therapies for acute and prophylactic migraine treatment. The target audience of this session is practicing pharmacists, pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, and associated medical professionals. The purpose of this session is to deliver education for an evolving, relevant issue to enhance pharmacist understanding and readiness in application to the clinical setting.
Learning Objectives1. Describe the proposed pathophysiologic causes of migraines.
2. Explain current research on new and emerging pharmacologic targets in migraine abortive and prophylactic therapies.
3. Analyze the current evidence-based recommendations for traditional abortive and prophylactic migraine therapies.
4. Evaluate the evidence regarding novel medication therapies for migraine abortive therapy and prophylaxis and describe their potential roles in therapy.
5. Design an evidence-based treatment regimen including abortive and prophylactic therapies for a patient living with migraines.
