SCHEDULE

BCEMP Clinical Session: Chart the Course: Navigating Emergency Medicine Challenges in Pregnancy and Pediatrics

Monday, October 14, 2024 from 9:45 AM to 11:15 AM MST at Convention Center North Building / Meeting Room 122

Available for 1.50 hours of CPE credit
Activity Number: 0217-9999-24-066-L01
Activity Type: An Application-Based Activity

Reviewing resources that emergency medicine pharmacists use to pursue board certification and discussing with peers who have already taken the exam revealed a common challenge—confusion surrounding pediatric antibiotic dosing, available formulations, and the management of pregnant patients. To address this gap, this clinical session aims to educate attendees, with a natural progression from antibiotic intricacies to managing beta-lactam documented allergies. This discussion extends to a common yet controversial topic: accelerated pretreatment regimens for contrast allergies. Each of these topics directly aligns with the knowledge emergency medicine pharmacists should have for successful board certification.

This activity is approved for Board Certified Emergency Medicine Pharmacist (BCEMP) recertification credit.

The BCEMP Clinical Sessions are part of the professional development program for the recertification of board-certified Emergency Medicine pharmacists by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and jointly provided by ACCP and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). In order to earn the BCEMP recertification credit, participants must attend the session, claim the continuing pharmacy education credit, and pass the associated posttest. Access to the BCEMP Clinical Sessions posttests will be available on December 18, 2024, at www.accp.com/myaccount to anyone who has purchased access to the BCEMP posttests. For participants who have not purchased access to the posttest, access can be purchased until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, at the ACCP Registration Desk. The deadline to submit posttests for these sessions will be December 16, 2025.

Learning Objectives

1. Appy clinical data evaluating pharmacotherapeutic options for managing postpartum hemorrhage in the emergency department.

2. Assess strategies for effectively managing medication considerations during both pregnancy and post-delivery breastfeeding.

3. Identify considerations for using standard-dose versus high-dose amoxicillin/clavulanate and when to use the three different formulations (4:1, 7:1, and 14:1 ratios of amoxicillin to clavulanate).

4. Evaluate strategies that help emergency medicine pharmacists avoid discharge antibiotic prescription errors based on published literature.

5. Compare beta-Lactam R-side chains and the risk of cross-reactivity that exists between them.

6. Recommend a pretreatment regimen for a patient with a contrast allergy based on the published literature.
