ACCP Research Institute 2011 PRN Report

As the ACCP Annual Meeting approaches, we wanted to share with you an update of the activities and success of the Research Institute. Thank you for supporting the ACCP Research Institute.

Join the ACCP PBRN

The ACCP PBRN is a group of clinical pharmacy members from across the United States delivering clinical pharmacy services at a variety of academic, inpatient, outpatient, and other practice settings. Together, they form a nationwide network of pharmacists interested in answering research questions. To join the ACCP PBRN, please visit our Web site (www.accpri.org) and complete the online registry form. Once you join the registry, you will need to complete a portfolio with PBRNConnect so that you can participate in any PBRN project (www.accpri.org/pbrnconnect).

The ACCP PBRN continues to grow since its launch in February 2009. We have more than 700 members to date, including members who have joined through existing PBRNs and whose data are shown below. We encourage each of you to join!

How do I join the ACCP PBRN?
The ACCP PBRN has created a one-stop resource for all PBRN-related materials called PBRNConnect. Located at www.accpri.org/pbrnconnect, this resource allows ACCP PBRN members to view, print, and download all research and PBRN-related documents. In addition, PBRNConnect will serve as a repository for all PBRN-related training. Moreover, each ACCP PBRN member will need to upload his or her own portfolio documents within the secure PBRNConnect site to be eligible to participate in ACCP PBRN studies. ACCP PBRN members can access this site using their usual ACCP.com login.

Generating Bright Ideas
Have a bright idea for the next ACCP PBRN project? Collaborate with the ACCP PBRN to complete your project. The ACCP PBRN is committed to supporting the research efforts of its members. We welcome proposals from ACCP PBRN members and other external investigators looking to collaborate with the ACCP PBRN to facilitate practice-based clinical pharmacy research. To learn more about how to collaborate with the ACCP PBRN, please visit www.accpri.org/pbrn/partner.aspx.

Medication Error Detection, Amelioration, and Prevention (MEDAP) Study:
The ACCP PBRN is grateful for all the clinical pharmacists who participated in the Medication Error Detection, Amelioration, and Prevention (MEDAP) Study. The MEDAP Study showed the success of the ACCP Research Institute Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN). This sentinel feasibility project for the ACCP PBRN was funded by the Frontiers Fund. Below is a list of all the members who participated in the MEDAP Study. Thank you for your efforts in making this study a success!

An Investment in Our Future. Frontiers Fund

Frontiers Fund

Frontiers Fund: Celebrating Success

In 2009, the Frontiers Fund launched a new campaign that asked members to donate to the new mission of the Research Institute (RI) and the Focused Investigator Training (FIT) Program and to create a nationwide clinical pharmacy practice-based research network (PBRN). Through these programs, the RI will receive national recognition as the place for clinical pharmacists to sharpen their research skills and prepare to compete for significant research funds. We appreciate the faith and confidence our Frontiers Fund donors have had in supporting our new efforts during the past few years. We would like to thank our donors and assure them that their donations have resulted in a great return on investment.

The FIT Program was offered for the fourth time earlier this summer. So far, 55 investigators have graduated from this highly rated grantsmanship program. FIT Program graduates have generated more than $17 million in new grant monies—simply astounding!

Our second fundraising goal was to establish the first national clinical pharmacy PBRN. We thank the more than 700 ACCP PBRN members who have joined the network. We built it and you came! A special thanks goes to our members who participated in the inaugural MEDAP (Medication Detection, Amelioration, and Prevention) Study that documented more than 700 medication error–related clinical pharmacist interventions. The manuscript will be published later this year. The potential of the ACCP PBRN to contribute robust and meaningful outcomes data to the clinical pharmacy community cannot be overestimated.

As we at the RI celebrate the success of the FIT Program and the completion of the inaugural ACCP PBRN project, we recognize these programs were made possible in large part by the contributions of several hundred ACCP members and organizations, as well as many PRNs, who donated in 2010 and 2011. However, further success cannot be achieved without additional support. Your tax-deductible donation will develop researchers, build the ACCP PBRN, and generate evidence to further document the value of clinical pharmacy services and advance pharmacy research.

The 2011 Frontiers Fund goals are to receive $100,000 in donations and to increase the percentage of members who donate from 4% to 6%. More information about the Frontiers Fund, including a complete list of donors since 1998, is available at www.accpri.com. Please consider donating to the Frontiers Fund in 2011 and join the others who have contributed to its success!

Focused Investigator Training

Focused Investigator Training (FIT) Program Success: More Than $17 Million in New Grant Monies Received

This program works! The amount of new grant funding for the 46 participants who graduated from the first three FIT classes exceeds $17 million. Grants include various K and R awards as well as industry grants.

Are you an experienced researcher, maybe at the associate or professor level, who has just not yet received that big federal grant as a principal investigator? Submit your proposal to the Focused Investigator Training (FIT) Program. There, National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded experts will analyze, dissect, chew on, think about, rehash, and then help you rebuild your proposal during the course of 1 week.

The fourth FIT Program was held in June 2011 at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in Tucson. Nine investigators attended the intensive, 1-week, hands-on program for experienced investigators who have not yet been awarded significant peer-reviewed extramural funding as a principal investigator. Through this mentored program, research-track faculty take necessary steps toward preparing a K, R, or similar investigator-initiated application for submission to the NIH or other major funding source. The next FIT Program will be held in the summer of 2013, with no program slated for 2012.

We thank the Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, and Critical Care PRNs for offering full tuition scholarships and the Ambulatory Care and Cardiology PRNs for offering partial tuition scholarships to 2011 FIT attendees. The Research Institute encourages all PRNs to consider this professional development opportunity for its members.
