Adult Medicine PRN

The Adult Medicine PRN consists of practitioners, residents, and students who have an interest in shaping the practice of adult medicine in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. The PRN currently has around 1000 members with diverse research, practice, education, and training experiences. The following paragraphs highlight some of the Adult Medicine PRN’s activities and member accomplishments.

Annual Meeting Networking Opportunity: Both the Nominations Committee and the Travel and Training Committee solicited nominations for several awards this spring. On Monday evening during the Annual Meeting, the Adult Medicine PRN business meeting and networking forum will recognize the recipients of the 2012 Mentoring Award, Resident/Fellow Research Award, Student Research Award, and Practitioner Registration Award. The winners of the Resident/Fellow and Student Research awards will make a 5- to 10-minute presentation at the PRN business meeting. An informal reception will follow, allowing time for networking with other members and collaboration on projects and with trainees looking for residency and job opportunities. The PRN will continue the tradition of reviewing and discussing posters of Adult Medicine PRN members at the 2012 Annual Meeting. Interested members should consider volunteering for the Walk-round Committee to talk with their colleagues about their research.

The Adult Medicine PRN would like to recognize and congratulate the following members on their notable accomplishments.

Critical Care PRN

Update on Specialization

Efforts to establish critical care pharmacy practice as a recognized specialty by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) continue as a result of the collaboration among ACCP, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA).  Following a request  by the three organizations, BPS completed its role delineation study (RDS) for critical care pharmacy practice in May of this year and issued a call for petitions for possible consideration for this proposed pharmacy specialty in June.

Over the past several months, the organizations have worked together to develop the formal petition, utilizing the RDS data and a variety of other materials needed to fulfill the criteria for an approvable petition.  A petition working group consisting of one member/practitioner in critical care from each of the three groups, together with consultants hired jointly by the organizations, has prepared the “final draft” of the petition, which will be reviewed for approval by the ACCP Board of Regents at its meeting later this month in Florida.  The draft petition was reviewed in September by the boards of ASHP and APhA and was approved by them.  Once acted upon by the ACCP Board of Regents, the final petition will be transmitted to BPS before the end of the year for its consideration and decision.

BPS has previously indicated that its response and decision on the petition can be expected during the first quarter of 2013. If the petition is approved, the first examination for certification in the specialty area of critical care pharmacy practice could be available as early as the fall of 2014, although no firm timeline is yet available. We will keep you updated as the process moves forward.

Committee Updates

Communications Committee: Committee members reviewed and updated the Critical Care PRN e-mail list guidelines. The updated guidelines were distributed through the e-mail list in June and are posted on the Critical Care PRN Web site. Members should refer to these guidelines when posting and responding to messages posted to the e-mail list. In addition, the Critical Care PRN history document underwent extensive revisions. Members of the PRN, especially new members, are encouraged to review the updated history document to gain a sense of the history and growth of the group, as well as an appreciation for the efforts of the group. The document is available on the PRN Web site. Finally, the Communications Committee compiled information from the various committees for the ACCP spring PRN Report. If you have any questions regarding the charges or activities of the Critical Care PRN Communications Committee, or how you can become involved, please contact the committee chair, Scott Bolesta, at [email protected].

Recognition Committee: The Recognition Committee has been busy completing its charges for the year. Several members from the Critical Care PRN were nominated for the ACCP Education, Clinical Practice, and Russell R. Miller awards. In addition, for the first year, we began nominating members for the “New” ACCP Awards: New Practitioner, New Educator, and New Investigator. The Critical Care PRN honors its members by presenting its own awards every year. Nominations have closed for these awards, and the committee is in the process of selecting this year’s recipients. In September, PRN members were asked to complete a survey to document their achievements in the past year. We hope to present some of these during the PRN business meeting at the Annual Meeting in October.

Student/Resident/Fellow Committee: The Student/Resident/Fellow Committee has been working to increase the involvement of trainees in the Critical Care PRN, as well as learn more about the needs of these members. The committee has recently reached out to all 2011–2012 graduating PGY2 critical care residents to encourage the completion of a demographics survey. The goal of this survey is to assist in tracking the involvement of residents, fellows, and students within ACCP and pharmacy as a whole. This will enable us to better understand the needs of our members in training. The results of the survey will be presented at the business meeting at the Annual Meeting. On behalf of the PRN, the Student, Resident, Fellow Committee has contacted all PGY2 critical care residency directors to offer a 1-year, complementary PRN membership to their 2012–2013 critical care resident. Interested residents were asked to provide their contact information to the member of the Student, Resident, Fellow Committee that contacted them. In addition, the committee chair, Pamela L. Smithburger, Pharm.D., BCPS, can be contacted by e-mail ([email protected]) with questions.

Travel Award Committee: The Awards Committee is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the Critical Care PRN Travel Awards. The Young Investigator Award is presented to Sara Jordan, Pharm.D., and the Resident and Fellow Award is given to Bryan Lizza, Pharm.D. Join us at the Business Meeting and Networking Forum in Hollywood, Florida, on Tuesday, October 23, to hear their platform presentations.

Education and Training PRN

The Education and Training PRN membership has grown to more than 400 members who are advancing the PRN’s mission of promoting dialogue and interaction to develop programs that enhance knowledge and skills needed to provide education and training within clinical pharmacy. The PRN and its members are proud to share our many accomplishments during the past several months and anticipate a busy upcoming year.

Our Scholarly Activities Committee is leading the development of a book that will offer useful teaching tips for clinical faculty and preceptors. More than 40 PRN members are writing this book with hopes to publish in the next year. A special thanks to Tina Denetclaw for her leadership on this very active committee.

The PRN will again be conducting student mock interviews at the Annual Meeting this year. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn key interviewing skills from clinical faculty and practitioners in preparation for application to postgraduate training programs or initial career positions.

Congratulations to the PRN’s newly elected officers. The incoming chair-elect is Kristi Kelley, and the incoming secretary/treasurer is Lori Hornsby.

Congratulations to our inaugural 2012 ACCP Annual Meeting Travel Award recipient, Roseann Gammal, a fourth-year pharmacy student from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She has shown interest and dedication to teaching, learning, and education, and we are excited to assist in her professional development in these endeavors. We look forward to introducing Ms. Gammal to the PRN at our Business Meeting and Networking Forum/mock interviews in October.

The EDTR is growing and would like to continue expanding its membership! We encourage ACCP members who are interested in promoting dialogue and interaction to enhance knowledge and skills in improving clinical pharmacy education and training to join the EDTR PRN.

Introduction and Updates

The Emergency Medicine PRN has seen large growth in membership and now has more than 400 members. We would like to thank our members for their continued support. Now completing its second year, the Collaborative Organization for Development of Emergency Medicine Pharmacists (CODE) program allows participants to collaborate for the advancement of emergency medicine pharmacy practice. This program encourages idea sharing and fosters professional growth among its participants. Participants submit biographic forms; then, each year in the fall, they are matched on the basis of their personally identified strengths and goals as they pertain to emergency medicine pharmacy practice. Additional participants can also be matched quarterly. Be sure to look for updates regarding the upcoming year’s registration process, and feel free to speak to any of the committee members if you have questions.

The PRN provides a forum for hematology/oncology pharmacists to network and collaborate on scientific, educational, and political issues affecting clinical practice, teaching, and research.

This year at the Annual Meeting, the PRN will have its focus session on the management of endocrine toxicities with targeted chemotherapy agents. We are proud to offer this session this year as an applicable and timely topic for all practitioners because more targeted agents are approved by the FDA on a yearly basis. We hope you can join us on Monday, October 22, from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the Annual Meeting in Hollywood, Florida.
