Adult Medicine PRN

Introduction:

The Adult Medicine PRN consists of practitioners, residents, and students who share interest in shaping the practice of adult medicine in a variety of settings through research and practice. The following paragraphs highlight some of the Adult Medicine PRN’s activities and member accomplishments.

For the ACCP Annual Meeting, the Adult Medicine PRN Programming Committee has been actively planning a focus session highlighting the optimal use of dual antiplatelet therapy. Practitioners will have the opportunity to review current evidence regarding indications for antiplatelet therapy and strategies for preventing complications from treatment.

The PRN Archives Committee has been busy developing and revising online content and ensuring the content and format are best suited for our members. Our Training and Travel Awards Committee has received applications and will be awarding students and new practitioners with travel awards during the ACCP Annual Meeting. The Nominations Committee has also reviewed applications and will be presenting awards at the upcoming Annual Meeting.

Ambulatory Care PRN

Introduction:

This has been a year of “Building Better” for the Ambulatory Care PRN. Membership has risen from about 1700 members in October 2013 to a projected 2000 members by October 2014! This year, the PRN funded three Focused Investigator Training Scholarships and six members’ ACCP Academy applications for the Annual Meeting. The PRN has developed informational flyers promoting membership/involvement in the PRN for local ACCP student chapters and second-year residencies in ambulatory care, as well as piloted the implementation of the first PRN Facebook page. In addition, a virtual symposium for research presentations was held. The PRN has continued to advocate for provider status and has worked through its Advocacy Committee to keep the membership updated on the changing political landscape in relation to ACCP’s provider status initiative. All of our members have been hard at work this year, and we are honored that they have chosen to be part of the Ambulatory Care PRN. Please see the information that follows for a list of submitted achievements.

Education and Training PRN

The Education and Training PRN has grown to more than 560 members who continue to advance the PRN’s mission of promoting dialogue and interaction to develop programs that enhance the knowledge and skills needed to provide education and training within clinical pharmacy. The PRN is happy to share the many accomplishments of its members and looks forward to another busy year.

First, we would like to welcome Joshua Caballero, Pharm.D., BCPP, as our incoming chair-elect and Laura Tsu, Pharm.D., BCPS, CGP, as our incoming secretary/treasurer. Dr. Caballero is an associate professor at Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Tsu is an assistant professor - pharmacy practice, Midwestern University - College of Pharmacy Glendale. We look forward to working with them. Sarah Nisly, Pharm.D., BCPS, will move from serving as chair-elect to chair for the upcoming year, and Kristi Kelley, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS, CDE, will serve an additional year as past chair. We want to thank Samantha Karr, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCACP, for her leadership and commitment to the PRN as she completes her service as past chair. Thank you, Dr. Karr, for all of your hard work!

The EDTR PRN will once again host the mock interviews for students and residents during the 2014 Annual Meeting in Austin immediately after the business meeting and networking forum on Monday, October 13, at 6 p.m. During the 2013 Annual Meeting, 52 interviewees took advantage of this opportunity to learn key interviewing skills from clinical faculty and practitioners in preparation for residency or initial career position interviews. Thirty-seven interviewers graciously volunteered their time to make this event a success. Most participants were able to go through two rounds of mock interviews to receive valuable feedback from several interviewers. We look forward to offering this activity at the upcoming meeting and ask that you encourage students and residents attending the meeting to take advantage of this opportunity.

The Student and Postgraduate Trainee Support Committee has had a busy and productive year, from providing support to the StuNet Advisory Committee to expanding the EDTR PRN Travel Scholarship to three awards, thanks in part to the success of the PRN’s first annual silent auction held during its annual business meeting. The recipients will be recognized in Austin at the PRN business meeting, where they will provide a short presentation. Please come by to support our winners and future colleagues. A special thanks to Michelle Musser, Pharm.D., BCPS; Heather Pentecost, Pharm.D.; James Scott, Pharm.D., FCCP; Andrew Smith, Pharm.D., BCPS; Yasar Tasnif, Pharm.D., BCPS;;Laura Tsu, Pharm.D., BCPS; Alana Whittaker, Pharm.D.; and Nancy Yunker, Pharm.D., BCPS, for their work on the Selection Committee.

The PRN is pleased to recognize two of its members who were participants in this year’s FIT Program as part of ACCP’s Research Institute: Daniel Riche, Pharm.D., BCPS, CDE; and Kayla Stover, Pharm.D., BCPS (AQ-ID), both with the University of Mississippi. The PRN voted to cover half tuition earlier this year. Both Drs. Riche and Stover received support from additional PRNs to cover their tuition for their participation. Dr. Stover received full tuition from the ID PRN, and Dr. Riche received half tuition from the Ambulatory Care PRN and the remaining half from the EDTR PRN. We are delighted to recognize these two members and their ongoing research. Dr. Riche’s research involves dietary supplements and hypertension. Dr. Stover’s research interest is in the area of antifungal pharmacotherapy. Both recipients will take a few moments to share their experiences with the FIT Program during our annual PRN business meeting in Austin. We look forward to learning more and encouraging our PRN members to participate in the future!

Don’t forget that the Scholarly Activities Committee has sponsored an enduring program on YouTube created specifically for the EDTR PRN, “Primer on Psychometric Issues with Educational Testing,” by Michael J. Peters, Pharm.D., MEd, BCPS. The program can be accessed by the link available through the PRN homepage. Continue to watch the e-mail list for information concerning additional programs to be offered in the future.

The EDTR PRN is proud of its growing membership and wants to continue to expand. We encourage ACCP members who are interested in promoting our mission to join the EDTR PRN.

COMMITTEE UPDATES

Programming Committee

On Monday, October 13, from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m., don’t miss afternoon programming developed by members of the Emergency Medicine PRN, which will focus on treating illicit drug intoxications in the emergency department, identifying potential treatment strategies for approaching toxidromes consistent with illicit drug intoxication, developing a treatment plan for an undifferentiated patient with a potential illicit drug intoxication, and discussing specific treatment strategies. Presenters will also provide a review of wilderness bites and envenomations; identify potential treatment strategies; discuss design dispensing, administration, and treatment protocols for common wilderness medicine presentations; and review opportunities to optimize care for those who are admitted to various inpatient services. The session will also include a review of prehospital care for illicit drug intoxication and wilderness bites. Those who have questions can contact Kyle Weant by e-mail ([email protected]).

Justification Task Force

The Justification Task Force continues its mission to provide a framework for developing an optimal business and practice model for the emergency department. The task force has finished developing an outline and detailed structure for the final recommendations and is now moving to the writing stages. Using an extensive database of primary literature to support recommendations, we anticipate that an initial draft of this framework will be completed by the end of the year. Those who have questions can contact Kyle Weant by e-mail ([email protected]).

Travel Award

The Travel Award Committee will award a Student and Resident Research Travel Award this year to help support the costs of travel and attendance at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting. A call for abstracts went out in August, e-mailed to members of the EMED PRN, and the deadline was September 1, 2014. Award winners will be notified by Monday, September 15, and they will present their research at the Emergency Medicine PRN business meeting and networking forum on Tuesday, October 14, at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. For more information regarding the Travel Awards, please visit the EMED PRN Web site (www.accp.com/docs/prns/emed/Travel_Award_-_EMED_PRN.pdf) or e-mail Nicole Acquisto ([email protected]).

Awards and Recognition Committee

The committee is currently developing PRN-specific awards to highlight members of the EMED PRN. The goal is to have these awards established and our first awardees designated by the 2015 Annual Meeting. In addition, the committee has supported nominations for the member spotlight for two cycles and is currently receiving nominations for student members. To date, the following individuals have been submitted for member spotlight:

  • Member: Mason Bucklin, Pharm.D.
  • Resident/Fellow: Elizabeth Giesler, Pharm.D., BCPS

Those who are interested in joining this committee or who have questions can contact Megan Musselman by e-mail ([email protected]).

Student Task Force

The Student Committee Task Force has finalized a survey that will be sent to all student members of the ACCP EMED PRN near the beginning of the academic school year (late August/early September). The purpose of this survey is to gather information regarding current student involvement in ACCP and the EMED PRN, available experiences in emergency medicine pharmacy and research, and interest in opportunities set forth by the EMED PRN Student Committee. Compiled data from the survey and the finalized Student Committee Framework and Responsibilities document will be presented at the EMED PRN business and networking forum on Tuesday, October 14, at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.

The EMED PRN would like to acknowledge and congratulate all of its members on their accomplishments and achievements, especially those listed in the following sections.

Current Officers

  • Chair (2013–2014) - Bob John, Pharm.D., BCPS
  • Immediate Past Chair - Hanna Phan, Pharm.D., BCPS
  • Chair-Elect - Joseph LaRochelle, Pharm.D.
  • Secretary - Janie Robles, Pharm.D.

Collaboration Committee (Chair: Joseph LaRochelle)

The Collaboration Committee has been hard at work on a major group paper. The Board of ACCP reviewed a proposal from the group and provided constructive feedback. The team reworked the first draft to produce a new draft titled “The Value of the Pediatric Clinical Pharmacist.” A team of editors are currently editing this draft to produce the final document. After an external review, it will be submitted to ACCP for final review. The committee believes this document will be a useful tool for pharmacists, physicians, hospital administrators, and other health care professionals.

Education Committee (Chair: Christina Piro)

The committee has been busily planning for the upcoming 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting PRN focus session. Because of member feedback, this year’s session will feature “Clinical Controversies in Pediatric Critical Care.” Placing renewed discussion among the pediatric community on the management of pulmonary hypertension, the first hour will address optimizing medication dosing across the pediatric population. In addition, many institutions are seeing a rise in the number of designer drug–related admissions, with little standardization of management approach. The second hour of programming will focus on reviewing current data in order to select appropriate management strategies. The Education Committee is charged with developing session proposals for the Annual Meeting. These proposals will rely heavily on PRN input and suggestions for topics. If you have any suggestions for future meetings, please contact the committee.

Nominations Committee (Chair: Tracy Hagemann)

The Nominations Committee sought candidates for chair-elect this year because the PRN’s secretary/treasurer position is elected only every other year. In response to an e-mail call for nominations, two were received, but only one person submitted all the required materials before the deadline. Christina Cox, assistant professor at South Carolina College of Pharmacy, was slated for and elected to the office of chair-elect. Congratulations, Christina!

Student and Resident Committee (Chair: Chasity Shelton)

We are developing a survey to administer to 2013–2014 student/resident/fellow members to determine whether they obtained a residency/fellowship/job and whether it was in the field of pediatrics or another field. We hope to present these data at the Annual Meeting.

We are going to survey 2014–2015 members to determine additional needs/wants from the committee. We would like to assign mentor/mentee pairs before the Annual Meeting. A sign-up list will be sent in September to pair mentors/mentees and will inquire whether they are attending the Annual Meeting. We would like to pair up those who are attending to allow them to meet face-to-face at the meeting (if they are not already from the same institution/area). Right now, we see our primary committee role as providing mentorship/networking opportunities to student/resident/fellow members. Research Committee (Chair: Varsha Bhatt-Mehta)

This being the first year for the Research Committee, the committee held several meetings to define its charges and develop a charter, which is currently under review. The goal of the Pediatrics PRN PBRN is to work under the umbrella of this parent ACCP PBRN and perform practice-based, patient outcomes–oriented research using the talent within the PRN to further pediatric pharmacotherapy research and the goals of the ACCP PBRN by closely collaborating and supporting its activities. Recently, the committee submitted an anticoagulation study to the Project Intake Committee for the PBRN.

Travel Award Committee (Chair: Hanna Phan)

For 2014, two travel awards ($1000 each) were available to the Pediatrics PRN membership—(1) a Student Travel Award and (2) a Resident/Fellow Travel Award. Applicants for these awards are Pediatrics PRN student/resident/fellow members who are presenting (e.g., poster) at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting. Recipients of the award will be recognized at the annual PRN business meeting and will present their projects to those in attendance. Award recipients will also be recognized through announcement on the PRN e-mail list and the Spring PRN Report. The number of award applicants has increased over the years, which shows a greater awareness of students and residents/fellows about the Pediatrics PRN and its commitment to supporting future pediatric pharmacists. This award would not be possible without the efforts of its application reviewers and the support of the Pediatrics PRN membership. The committee would like to thank all reviewers through the years for their time and expertise and the Pediatrics PRN membership for supporting this award!
