Adult Medicine PRN

The ACCP Adult Medicine PRN is one of the largest and most diverse PRNs, encompassing pharmacists who practice in inpatient and outpatient settings, academia, and the pharmaceutical industry. Members of the Adult Medicine PRN work tirelessly to expand the frontiers of clinical pharmacy by improving patient care, conducting research, and providing education in their everyday practices.

The AMED PRN is excited for the 2017 Annual Meeting in Phoenix. The PRN hopes you can join PRN members for the PRN’s focus session on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at 4 p.m. (MST), “Feeling the Burn of Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy: When Do the Risks Outweigh the Benefits.” The PRN will also conduct its annual business meeting and networking forum on Monday, October 9, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. (MST).

We invite you to stay connected with the AMED PRN after the Annual Meeting. Find us on Facebook (facebook.com/accpamedprn) and Twitter (@accpamedprn); follow us and use the hashtag #amedprn! Or join us throughout 2017 and 2018 for our popular monthly online journal clubs led by the PRN’s pharmacy practice residents. We are enthusiastic about the activity within the AMED PRN and are proud of our members’ recent accomplishments (outlined below). Please join us in congratulating them!

Education and Training PRN

Introduction

Over the past 6 months, the EDTR PRN committees have been preparing for the Annual Meeting as well as brainstorming additional avenues to support the development of its members. Specifically, the Professional Development Committee developed the first annual Teaching Enhancement Grant for PRN members to support educational initiatives. In addition, the PRN has expanded its social media presence with the use of Twitter and an increase in Facebook followers. Finally, several committees have worked together to adjust the PRN’s poster walk-rounds process for all PRN members, including students, residents, and fellows.

HIV PRN

Introduction

The HIV PRN brings together almost 300 members and trainees with a dedicated interest in providing services to individuals living with HIV. HIV PRN members are encouraged to come together to share their diverse clinical practices, complex cases, and research, education, and training experiences in order to network with other members as well as seek clinical advice. Members of the HIV PRN’s Research Committee published the PRN’s first official publication this spring. This useful reference is available in the May 2017 Pharmacotherapy issue for clinicians treating patients living with HIV in the hospital setting. Many thanks to Melissa Badowski, Spencer Durham, Michelle Liedtke, Patricia Pecora Fulco, and Chris Rathbun for offering their clinical expertise and leading this effort. Please join the HIV PRN for food, drink, and networking during our business meeting at this year’s ACCP Annual Meeting:

Infectious Diseases PRN

Introduction

The Infectious Diseases PRN (ID PRN) is one of the largest PRNs, with just more than 2200 members, over one-third of whom are fellows, residents, and students. The ID PRN has six active committees: Programming, Nominations, Awards, and Publications, Social Media, and Research, the last two of which were added this year.

The Programming Committee worked diligently to develop a 90-minute ID PRN focus session for the ACCP Annual Meeting in Phoenix. ID PRN members Jarod Nagel, Jason Pogue, and Marc Sheetz will present topics for the session titled “Antimicrobial Dosing Dilemmas.” The Nominations and Awards committees reviewed the incoming ID PRN officers and award nominees.

We would like to congratulate the incoming officers: Elias Chahine (chair), Olga DeTorres (chair-elect), and Ashley Marx (secretary/treasurer). We look forward to announcing the award winners at the upcoming ACCP Annual Meeting. The Publications Committee continues to have great engagement from all of its committee members on the next publication of the ID PRN newsletter, which is expected to be released this August.

The Social Media Committee has had a very successful first year. The committee has worked to continually increase the ID PRN Twitter presence (@accpinfdprn, #IDPRN) to over 1500 followers and provide educational opportunities through which PRN members share ideas. A Twitter chat on mentorship and research was held recently in conjunction with SIDP, with another chat planned for September with SIDP and the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists regarding antimicrobial stewardship in the long-term care setting. In addition, the Social Media committee has created an ID PRN Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ACCP-Infectious-Diseases-PRN-581204852070088/) with almost 1500 followers where member accomplishments and breaking news/manuscripts are shared. The Research Committee has begun to discuss strategies for fostering research interest and opportunities for ID PRN members.

Perioperative Care PRN

Introduction

The Perioperative Care PRN will celebrate its 3 years in existence at the 2017 ACCP Annual Meeting. PRN members are happy to report that the PRN’s membership has rapidly grown to almost 120 members! This PRN was established to provide education and resources related to the overall treatment of perioperative patients. Areas of interest range from regulatory requirements to early recovery after surgery to multimodal pain management and beyond.

Over the past year, the Perioperative Care PRN has improved its Internet presence. This has included updating the PRN webpage, launching a new Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/ACCP-Perioperative-Care-PRN-172647483256115/ ) that also updates directly to the PRN webpage, and regularly posting relevant articles, updates, and announcements on both Facebook and the webpage. The PRN also hosted its first Lunch & Learn Webinar, titled “Development and Implementation of Preemptive Analgesia and Sugammadex Stewardship,” presented by Drs. Sara Jordan, Brian Kramer, and Adam Trimble in June with great audience participation. A focus group within the Research and Education Committee has been organized to begin writing a PRN opinion paper on the role of pharmacists in perioperative care. Finally, the Perioperative Care PRN was excited to offer its first student and resident/fellow travel awards for the 2017 Annual Meeting.

The Perioperative Care PRN looks forward to moderating the 2017 Annual Meeting focus session titled “Enhanced Recovery: The Paradigm Shift in Perioperative Care” on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 3:30 p.m. Three nationally known experts in various aspects of perioperative care and medication management will discuss opportunities for clinical pharmacy integration. The PRN will also host a business and networking meeting on Sunday, October 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Cave Creek Meeting Room at the Sheraton Grand Phoenix. We hope to see many of you at both events.

The Perioperative Care PRN is pleased to recognize the following members for their awards and accomplishments.
