For the first time since 2019, ACCP’s Annual Meeting will once again be a live, in-person event. And what better way to resume live meetings than with the 2022 ACCP Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy in the great city of San Francisco!
Like past meetings, the Global Conference will offer recertification credit opportunities, PRN focus sessions, ACCP Academy programming, student/resident/fellow programming, and networking opportunities. In addition, this year’s meeting will offer special sessions on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as well as medication optimization.
Global Conference to Offer Two Sessions on Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Providing education on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) topics and inviting members with expertise in this area to share their work because allies and advocates are important initiatives in the 2020 ACCP Strategic Plan. The upcoming ACCP Global Conference will feature two DEI sessions. The first, “Fostering a More Diverse Profession: Bringing Underrepresented Groups into the Pharmacy Workforce Pipeline,” will be held Saturday, October 15, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (PDT). Pharmacy workforce data, as well as data collected from colleges of pharmacy and residency programs, clearly demonstrate that the pharmacy profession, similar to the medical and dentistry professions, does not currently reflect the diversity profile of the United States. Although many academic and health care institutions are committed to DEI principles, most struggle with how to promote interest in the profession among underrepresented groups. This panel discussion, moderated by Past-President Jimmi Hatton Kolpek, will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn from experienced pharmacy leaders who are helping their academic and/or health care institutions or professional associations to implement strategies to improve diversity in the pharmacy workforce. Panelists will include Marie Chisholm-Burns, Pharm.D., Ph.D., MPH, MBA, FCCP, FASHP, FAST; John Allen, Pharm.D., FCCP, FCCM, BCPS, BCCCP; and Hope Campbell, Pharm.D. The panelists will share their involvement in DEI advocacy, identifying both successes and challenges as well as strategies and resources developed to aid in building a more diverse and inclusive culture within the profession. Attendees will be able to take the knowledge gained from this panel discussion back to their places of work and professional associations to reinforce current DEI initiatives and stimulate new ideas for improving diversity.
The second DEI session, “Incorporating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Principles in Pharmacy Experiential Education,” will take place Tuesday, October 18, from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. (PDT). This session is designed for faculty and clinicians precepting students, residents, and fellows in the clinical learning environment, but will also be of interest to students and residents. The presentation by Stuart Haines, Pharm.D., FCCP, FASHP, FAPhA, BCPS, BCACP, “Establishing Supportive Mentoring Relationships with Students and Residents,” will help attendees describe the negative impact that unconscious bias and microaggressions have on learners and the profession, identify strategies that preceptors and mentors can use to create a supportive and psychologically safe environment for students and residents, and develop the ability to provide feedback in a manner that acknowledges strengths and promotes growth. The session will end with a presentation by Sharmon Osae, Pharm.D., BCACP, “Integrating Health Equity into Experiential Education.” This presentation will review the literature on the impact of adverse social determinants of health (SDOH) on achieving health equity and address strategies to incorporate identification and management of SDOH into the JCPP Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process.
Global Conference Medication Optimization Programming
We invite you to attend Global Conference sessions showcasing member expertise in achieving medication optimization in varied settings and patient populations. Join us Saturday, October 15, at 9:45 a.m., for a session moderated by Omolola Adeoye-Olatunde, Pharm.D., M.S., titled “Successful Medication Optimization Services for Medically Underserved and Socially Disadvantaged Populations.” This session is designed for clinical pharmacists, students, and residents who wish to gain knowledge related to health disparities and practical strategies to address health care gaps and improve health equity through medication optimization services for medically underserved and socially disadvantaged populations. The first presentation, by Cheryl Wisseh, Pharm.D., MPH, will provide a foundation by defining important terms, providing evidence of health disparities, and describing clinical pharmacist opportunities and responsibilities to address health inequities. Sonak Pastakia, Pharm.D., MPH, Ph.D., FCCP, BCPS, will then describe successful models of care and analyze the clinical results of services incorporating social determinants of health in Kenya and the United States. In the context of telehealth services, Jon Easter, RPh, will share challenges of and enabling factors for engaging medically underserved and socially disadvantaged patients together with strategies for the economic sustainability of these services. A panel question and answer with session speakers will allow an opportunity for further engagement with these experts in the field. This session is open to all Global Conference registrants and offers elective credit for the CMM Implementation Academy in addition to traditional CPE credit.
Don’t miss the Comprehensive Medication Management (CMM) Consultancy on Monday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m. (PDT). This unique and engaging session format has received rave reviews from attendees at prior meetings. Todd D. Sorensen, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAPhA, and M. Shawn McFarland, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS, BCACP, BC-ADM, will engage participants in problem-solving conversations on real-time practice implementation challenges presented by session participants. This will be an “all teach, all learn” session during which the collective experience and creativity of the participants will be used to identify strategies to address the participant challenges shared during several 15-minute case presentations.
