Marcath, Concannon, and Zhang Receive Best Poster Honors

Winners of the Best Student, Best Resident or Fellow Poster, and Best Poster awards from the 2024 ACCP Annual Meeting in Phoenix were announced Monday, October 14, 2024, after they had delivered platform presentations of their research. Posters presented at the Annual Meeting described original research, innovative clinical pharmacy services and programs, case reports, systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and student, resident, and fellow research-in-progress.

Marisa Marcath from Wayne State University, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Detroit, Michigan, won the Best Student Poster Award. She presented “Impact of #PlanA Reproductive Health Seminars on College Students’ Contraception and Safe Sex Knowledge.” Her coauthors included Kayla Craig, Pharm.D. Candidate and Mary Beth O’Connell, Pharm.D. (Wayne State University, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Detroit, Michigan).

The other student finalist in this category was Landon Welch from the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, Salt Lake City, Utah. Landon presented the abstract titled “Association of Atrial Fibrillation with Lamotrigine in Bipolar I Disorder: An Observational Cohort Study.” The research was conducted in collaboration with Sodam Kim, Pharm.D. (Department of Pharmacy Systems and Outcomes and Policy, University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago, Illinois); Bertha De Los Santos, Pharm.D., M.S. (Department of Pharmacy Systems Outcomes & Policy, University of Illinois Chicago College of Pharmacy, Chicago, Illinois); Przemyslaw Radwański, Pharm.D., Ph.D., FAHA (Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; The Frick Center for Heart Failure and Arrhythmia, Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, College of Medicine, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical, Columbus, Ohio); and Mark Munger, Pharm.D., FCCP (Department of Pharmacotherapy, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah).

The winner of the Best Resident or Fellow Poster Award was Kennedy Concannon, Pharm.D., from the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Concannon presented “Concurrent Apixaban with Itraconazole or Posaconazole Pharmacokinetic and Clinical Outcome Evaluation in Cardiothoracic Transplant Recipients.” The research was conducted in collaboration with Rachel Huntsman, Pharm.D. and Adley Lemke, Pharm.D. (Department of Pharmacy, Mayo Clinic Hospital); Kristin Cole, M.S. (Division of Clinical Trials and Biostatistics, Mayo Clinic); Cassie Kennedy, M.D. (Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Mayo Clinic Hospital); and Andrew Rosenbaum, M.D. (Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Mayo Clinic Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota).

The other finalist in the Best Resident or Fellow Poster competition was Madeline Dillen, Pharm.D., from UPMC St. Margaret, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dillen presented the abstract titled “Impact of an Addiction Medicine Consult Service on Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Initiation in Hospitalized Patients.” The research was conducted in collaboration with Megan Baumgartner, Pharm.D., BCPS and Alexandria Taylor, Pharm.D., BCPS (UPMC St. Margaret); Frank D’Amico, Ph.D. (Department of Biostatistics, UPMC St. Margaret); Sanketh Proddutur, M.D. (UPMC St. Margaret); and Joshua Shulman, M.D. (UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

Lusi Zhang, Pharm.D., MPI, from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in Minneapolis, Minnesota, won the Best Poster Award for her poster. Zhang’s abstract was titled “Polygenic Interactions with Anticholinergic Burden Impact Cognition and Brain Structure in Psychotic Disorders.” The research was conducted in collaboration with a multi-institutional team, including Elena I. Ivleva, M.D. (University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center); David A. Parker, Ph.D., Jennifer E. McDowell, Ph.D., and Brett A. Clementz, Ph.D. (University of Georgia); Scot K. Hill, Ph.D. (Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science); Paulo Lizano, M.D., Ph.D. and Matcheri S. Keshavan, M.D. (Harvard Medical School); Richard S.E. Keefe, Ph.D. (Duke University Medical Center); Sarah K. Keedy, Ph.D. and Elliot S. Gershon, M.D. (University of Chicago); Godfrey D. Pearlson, M.D. (Yale University); Carol A. Tamminga, M.D. (University of Texas Southwestern); and John A. Sweeney, Ph.D. (University of Cincinnati).

The other finalists in the Best Poster competition were Ashton Pearce, Pharm.D., MSCR, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Kristen Szempruch, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCTXP, from the University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill.

Pearce presented the abstract titled “CYP2C19 Genotype-Guided Antiplatelet Therapy After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Patients with High Bleeding Risk: Evaluating the Clinical Impact in a Real-world Setting.” The research was conducted in collaboration with Kayla Tunehag, Pharm.D., MSPH, and Craig R. Lee, Pharm.D., Ph.D., FCCP (Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), as well as George A. Stouffer, M.D. and Joseph S. Rossi, M.D., MSCI (Division of Cardiology and McAllister Heart Institute, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). Szempruch presented the abstract titled “Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor Use in Alemtuzumab vs. Anti-thymocyte Globulin Induction with Rapid Steroid Withdrawal Regimen in Adult Kidney Transplant Recipients.” The research was conducted in collaboration with Jason Ifeanyi, Pharm.D. and Laura Chargualaf, Pharm.D., BCPS (University of North Carolina Medical Center), as well as Mary Chandran, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAST, BCTXP, BCPS, CPP (University of North Carolina Medical Center, Chapel Hill).

Each winner received a plaque. Serving as judges for the Best Student Poster competition were Doug Jennings, Robbie Parker, Hanna Phan, and Erin Raney. Serving as judges for the Best Resident or Fellow Poster competition were Elizabeth Farrington, Miki Goldwire, Zach Smith, Dustin Spencer, and Sarah Spinler. Serving as judges for the Best Poster competition were Leo Buckley, Erika Ernst, Curtis Haas, Judith Jacobi, and Harminder Sikand.
