DeRemer Wins Best Paper Competition; Farina and Oni-Orisan Receive Best Poster Honors

The winner of the Best Paper Award from the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting was announced on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, during the Scientific Poster Presentation II. Winners of the Best Student Poster Award and Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award were announced on Monday, October 13, 2014. In all, 440 abstracts were presented at the Annual Meeting. Of these, 218 were reports of original research, 89 described innovative clinical pharmacy services, 30 described original resident and fellow research-in-progress, and 103 were student submissions. In addition, several papers were encore presentations of work that had been presented in abstract form at other scientific meetings.

Dr. David DeRemer from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, Augusta, Georgia, won the Best Paper Award with the presentation titled “Evaluation of the Effects of Obesity on the Epigenome in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients: Correlation with Clinical Outcome and Drug Response.” DeRemer’s coauthors were Megan Hartranft, Rosalind Franklin College of Pharmacy, Chicago, Illinois; Ashis Mondal, Georgia Regents University, Augusta, Georgia; Ravindra Kolhe, Georgia Regents University, Georgia Regents Cancer Center, Augusta, Georgia; and Bradley Phillips, University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, Athens, Georgia. The first of the two runners-up in the Best Paper competition was Dr. Jeff Bubp from First Databank, Inc., South San Francisco, California, for “Description and Validation of the Disease Interaction Scoring Tool (DIST) for an Electronic Health Record (EHR) Integrated Drug Knowledgebase.” Bubp’s coauthors were Joan Kapusnik-Uner, First Databank, Inc., South San Francisco, California; Brian Hoberman, Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco, California; Harrison Wright, Kaiser Permanente, Rohnert Park, California; Emanuel Kwahk, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, California; and Karl A. Matuszewski, First Databank, Inc., South San Francisco, California. The second of the two runners-up in the Best Paper competition was Dr. Steven Smith from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, with the presentation titled “Physician Engagement and Acceptance of Collaborative Treatment of Hypertension in Primary Care.” Smith’s coauthors were Michaela Hasan, University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Aurora, Colorado; Amy Huebschmann, Richard Penaloza, Wagner Schorr-Ratzlaff, and Amber Sieja from the University of Colorado, Aurora, Colorado; and Katy E. Trinkley, University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Aurora, Colorado. The other finalists in this category were Stephanie Atueyi, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida; Jennie Broders, UPMC St. Margaret, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Mitchell S. Buckley, Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona; Mojdeh Heavner, Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut; and Joyce You, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

Dr. Akinyemi Oni-Orisan, from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, won the Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award for “Initial Characterization of Cytochrome P450–Derived Eicosanoids as a Predictive Biomarker in Coronary Artery Disease.” Oni-Orisan’s coauthors were Katherine N. Theken, Robert N. Schuck, and Craig R. Lee, also from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Matthew L. Edin and Darryl C. Zeldin, from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; and Alan L. Hinderliter and George A. Stouffer, UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The first runner-up in the Best Resident and Fellow Poster category was Dr. Jason Karnes from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, for “Genome-Wide Association Study of Fluoroquinolone-Induced Tendonitis.” Karnes’s coauthors were Jonathan Mosley, Christian Shaffer, Erica Bowton, Jessica Delaney, Sara Van Driest, Peter Weeke, Quinn Wells, Joshua Denny, and Dan Roden, also from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. The second runner-up was Dr. Kevin McConeghy from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, Chicago, Illinois, for “The Impact of Pharmacy-Based Immunization Regulations on Influenza Vaccination Rates.” McConeghy’s coauthor was Coady Wing from the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, Chicago, Illinois. The other finalists in this category were Rickey Evans, University of Kentucky Healthcare, Lexington, Kentucky; and Christina Guerra, Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut.

Nicholas Farina from the School of Pharmacy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, won the Best Student Poster Award for “Characterization of Delirium in a Medical ICU That Emphasizes Frequent Delirium Screening at a Tertiary, Academic Medical Center.” Farina’s coauthors on the poster were Kevin Ordons, Rachel Filiaggi, Melissa Shook, Marissa Csovelak, and Sandra Kane-Gill, also from the School of Pharmacy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Pamela L. Smithburger, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Ryan Rivosecchi, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center - Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The first runner-up in this category was Austin Ballew from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy, Abilene, Texas, for “Evaluating Current Recommended Dose of Enoxaparin in Renally Impaired and Morbidly Obese Patients by Monitoring Anti-factor Xa Levels.” Ballew’s coauthors were Young Lee, Jose Vega, and Hanh-Nhi Duong, also from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy, Abilene, Texas. The second runner-up in this category was John Diep, University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Buffalo, New York, for “Polymyxin Combinations to Combat Polymyxin Resistant KPC-Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae.” Diep’s coauthors were Cely S. Abboud, Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia, São Paulo, Brazil; and Brenda Yu, David Jacobs, Patricia N. Holden, Alan Forrest, Brian T. Tsuji, and Gauri Rao, also from the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Buffalo, New York. The other finalists in this category were Daniel Gratie, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, Chicago, Illinois; and Iffat Shafiq, University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Buffalo, New York.

Each winner received a plaque and a $350 ACCP gift certificate. First runners-up received a $100 gift certificate, and second runners-up received a $50 certificate. Serving as finalist judges for the Best Student Poster competition were Vicki Ellingrod, Michael Ernst, Elizabeth Farrington, Casey Laizure, and Michael Peeters. Serving as finalist judges for the Best Resident and Fellow Poster competition were Marcia Buck, Julie Maurey, Beth Resman-Targoff, Harminder Sikand, and Robert Talbert. Finally, serving as finalist judges for the Best Paper competition were Michael Bottorff, Jill Kolesar, Cynthia Sanoski, Jim Tisdale, and Mike Ujhelyi.
