Stone, Buckley, and Jain Receive Best Poster Honors

Winners of the Best Poster Awards at the 2017 ACCP Annual Meeting in Phoenix were announced Monday, October 9, 2017, after delivering platform presentations of their research. In all, more than 500 posters were presented at the Annual Meeting. Papers described original research, innovative clinical pharmacy services and programs, case reports, systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and student, resident, and fellow research-in-progress.

Rebecca Stone from the Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy at University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, won the Best Poster Award for Oral Emergency Contraception Access and Patient Counseling: Are There Differences Between Metropolitan and Nonmetropolitan Pharmacies in Georgia? Stone’s coauthors were Dennia Ernest, Brielle Scutt, and Stella Hur, Pharm.D. Candidates, also from University of Georgia; and Sally Rafie, University of California San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, La Jolla, California.

Other finalists in the Best Poster competition were:

  • Sarah Petite from University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toledo, Ohio, for Assessment of Glycemic Control in Diabetic Patients While Unable to Eat, cowritten with Joseph Huenecke, Natalie Tuttle, and Jeremy Patton, also from University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Maryam Zaeem from University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, New York, for Evaluation of Outcomes in Patients with ICH Receiving 4F-PCC: A Comparison of Patients With and Without Trial ICH Exclusion Criteria, cowritten with Blake Porter, Samantha Delibert, Courtney Jones, and Nicole Acquisto, also from University of Rochester Medical Center.
  • Meredith McSwain from Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Buies Creek, North Carolina, for An Analysis of U.S. Childhood Vaccination Uptake and Associated Predictors Utilizing the National Immunization Survey for Years 2008 through 2015, cowritten with Ashley Holombo, Michael Jiroutek, and Melissa Holland, also from Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Leo Buckley, Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, won the Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award for Intensive Blood Pressure Control in Patients With and Without Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Analysis of SPRINT and ACCORD BP. Buckley’s coauthors were Dave Dixon, George Wohlford, Dayanjan Wijesinghe, and Benjamin Van Tassell, also from Virginia Commonwealth University; and William Baker, University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, Storrs, Connecticut.

Other finalists in the Best Resident and Fellow Poster competition were:

  • Deborah Pestka from University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, Minneapolis, Minnesota, for Developing a Tool to Assess the Essential Components of Practice Management for Comprehensive Medication Management Within Primary Care Clinics, cowritten with Caitlin Frail, Lindsay Sorge, and Kylee Funk, also from University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy; and Mary Roth McClurg from University of North Carolina Eschelman School of Pharmacy, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
  • Emma Gorman from Buffalo General Medical Center, Buffalo, New York, for Impact of a Pharmacist-Driven Transition of Care Program for Patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes, cowritten with Ashley Woodruff, Jessica Costello, and Geoffrey Brown, from the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Buffalo, New York.
  • Grace Benanti from University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, for Empiric Carbapenems versus Cefepime or Piperacillin-Tazobactam for the Treatment of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli Bacteremia in Patients with Hematologic Malignancies, cowritten with Anne Rain Tanner Brown, Terri Lynn Shigle, Jeffrey Tarrand, Micah Bhatti, Patrick McDaneld, Samuel Shelburne, and Samuel Aitken, also from University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Barkha Jain from the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration at Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers, State University of New Jersey, Piscataway, New Jersey, won the Best Student Poster Award for Comparison of Hospital Resource Utilization Parameters in Patients with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation Anticoagulated with Rivaroxaban versus Warfarin: A Retrospective Cohort Study. Jain’s coauthor was Luigi Brunetti from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerville, New Jersey.

  • Wai Yin (Haddy) Leung, University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Buffalo, New York, for Incidence and Risk Factors for Healthcare Utilization Among Patients Discharged on Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT), cowritten with David Essi, Woojin Park, Amy Shaver, and David Jacobs, also from University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Gauri Rau, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
  • Peia Lee, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Dallas, Texas, for Do the Types and Routes of Proton Pump Inhibitor Treatments Affect Clostridium difficile in the ICU Patient?, cowritten with David Fike, Ronald Hall, Steven Pass, and Carlos Alvarez, also from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
  • Shirley Chen, University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Buffalo, New York, for Association of Cytochrome P450 3A4*1-beta Genotype and Tacrolimus Pharmacokinetics in Stable African American and Caucasian Renal Transplant Patients, cowritten with Kathleen Tornatore, also from University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Daniel Brazeau, University of New England College of Pharmacy, Portland, Maine; Jacob Warner, University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, Portland, Maine; and Rocco Venuto, Eric County Medical Center and University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Buffalo, New York.

Each winner received a plaque. Serving as judges for the Best Student Poster competition were Ian Hollis, Anne Hume, Judith Jacobi, and Gary Milavetz. Serving as judges for the Best Resident and Fellow Poster competition were Brad Boucher, Mary Beth O’Connell, Frank Paloucek, Beth Resman-Targoff, and Dustin Spencer. Serving as judges for the Best Poster competition were Michael Bottorff, Mary Ensom, Casey Laizure, Mark Shaefer, and James Tisdale.
