ACCP’s Self-Assessment Programs are home study series that provide clinical pharmacists with pertinent therapeutic updates to enhance their practice skills and improve patient outcomes.
ACSAP has been approved by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) as a professional development activity for Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP) recertification.

Pharmacists can use ACSAP to develop and assess their knowledge in the science and application of pharmacotherapy. This information can be integrated into structured training programs or assist advanced-level practitioners in maintaining their clinical competence.
“It's important to be knowledgeable in as many areas of pharmacy as possible when working as an ambulatory care pharmacist. We encounter everything.”
— Kyle V. Sheffer, Pharm.D., BCACP, NCPS, Senior Pharmacist, Indian Health Service, Santa Fe, New Mexico
Leading the new edition are Series Editor Betty J. Dong, Pharm.D., FCCP, FASHP, FAPHA, AAHIVP, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Family and Community Medicine, University of California Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, San Francisco, California; and Series Editor David P. Elliott, Pharm.D., FCCP, FASCP, CGP, AGSF, Professor and Associate Chair for the Charleston Division, Department of Clinical Pharmacy, West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, Charleston, West Virginia
“Keeps me up with the most current guidelines and a good review of subjects that I work less with on a day-to-day basis.”
— Julie Bartell, Pharm.D., CACP, BCACP, Clinical Pharmacotherapist, Pharmacy Residency Program Director, Monroe Clinic, Monroe, Wisconsin
Each ACSAP release is an online book made up of peer-reviewed chapters that update a specific therapeutic area. To help integrate this information into practice, chapters include the following, where appropriate:
- In-text references to the latest research
- Graphics that directly relate information to clinical practice
- Full-color photographs, illustrations, and audio and video files
- Hyperlinks to assessment tools, patient resources, and the latest guidelines
- Algorithms and Practice Points (the take-home messages)
Learner self-assessment is by high-level, case-based, multiple-choice questions that test application of the material to real-world practice scenarios. Explained answers are a vital component of the learning process and include a detailed rationale for each self-assessment question with hyperlinks to citations that support optimal decision-making. For more on ACPE and BCACP credit from ACSAP, see below.
“Practice points and pivotal studies are things that I can bring back into my practice and improve prescribing patterns within my clinic or apply to patients that I see. The hyperlinks are useful as they allow for reading/reviewing additional content and might be a reference I can use at work.”
— Brian Kopcza, Pharm.D., BCACP, Clinical Specialist, Ambulatory Care, Family Medicine Clinic, Boston Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts
The principal ACSAP release is an online book, provided as an interactive PDF that can be saved to the desktop or printed. The latest version of Adobe Reader (available free) offers functionality such as highlighting or adding “sticky notes” to the text. Intra-document and external links connect you immediately to the information you want and need. As each book is released, the online book is automatically added to your “My Account” page on the ACCP Web site. A required posttest must be submitted within 4 months of the release date to be eligible for BCACP recertification credit.
For this new edition, the e-media version is included with any ACSAP purchase. Perfect for “anywhere, anytime” access, the e-media allows ACSAP information to be viewed on an e-reader, tablet, iOS or Android smart phone.
“Information is presented in an easy-to-use format for future reference and applies what you are studying to real life cases.”
— Alexis R. Hagenhoff, Pharm.D., BCACP, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis, Indiana

Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit
The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The number of continuing pharmacy education contact hours earned for successfully completing a posttest varies with each ACSAP module. The ACPE-approved continuing pharmacy education credit associated with each ACSAP module is available for 3 years after the date of release. All ACSAP releases are application-based activities.
BCACP Recertification Credit
Subscribers seeking board certified pharmacotherapy specialist (BCACP) recertification credit from an ACSAP module must submit the required posttest within 4 months after the book’s release. Recertification credits earned from a passing score on an ACSAP module are forwarded to BPS. For statements of credit, visit www.mycpemonitor.net.
This nine-book ACSAP series is designed to provide sufficient opportunity for the 100 credits needed for BCACP recertification by continuing education.
ACPE Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit
To receive ACPE continuing pharmacy education credit for an ACSAP module, the posttest must be completed online and submitted within 3 years of the book’s release. ACPE continuing pharmacy education credit is awarded for posttest scores of 50% or greater. Answers to the self-assessment questions, with detailed rationale and supporting references, are made available online to subscribers after the close of the BCACP testing period.
Waiving Credit
To receive detailed answers to ACSAP questions without submitting a posttest, go to “My Account” on the ACCP Web site, select the module you wish to waive, and click the “waive credit” link. You will receive a link to view the self-assessment question answers, along with detailed rationale and supporting references. By completing this process, you waive the opportunity to receive continuing pharmacy education credit for that ACSAP module.
