Target Audience

Goals

The Applied Pharmacogenomics Certificate Program is an interactive, practice-based program designed to help clinical pharmacists understand how genetic factors influence the efficacy and adverse effects of drug therapy. Participants will learn empirical strategies for applying this knowledge in a clinical setting.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic genetic concepts and nomenclature, and how genetic variation contributes to inter-individual variability in drug pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and adverse effects.
  • Recommend clinical pharmacogenomic testing, when appropriate, and interpret the results to guide optimal drug selection and dosing.
  • Use evidence-based guidelines and literature to formulate patient-specific medication recommendations based on pharmacogenomic test results and other patient-specific factors, and communicate these recommendations to the health care team.
  • Educate patients and health care professionals about the principles of clinical pharmacogenomics, including clinical utility, cost-effectiveness, reimbursement, and ethical, legal, and social implications of pharmacogenomic testing.
  • Develop a clinical pharmacogenomics implementation plan, including an assessment of clinical informatics resources (e.g., clinical decision support tools), which can be applied at the institutional or system level.

Competencies

Domain 1 – Foundational Knowledge

1.1 Learner (Learner) - Develop, integrate, and apply knowledge from the pharmacogenomic and clinical sciences to evaluate the scientific literature, explain drug action, solve therapeutic problems, and advance population health and patient centered care.

Domain 2 – Essentials for Practice and Care

2.1 Patient-centered care (Caregiver) - Provide patient-centered care as the medication expert (collect and interpret evidence, prioritize, formulate assessments and recommendations, implement, monitor and adjust plans, and document activities).

Domain 3 – Approach to Practice and Care

3.1 Problem Solving (Problem Solver) – Identify problems; explore and prioritize potential strategies; and design, implement, and evaluate a viable solution.
3.4 Interprofessional collaboration (Collaborator) – Actively participate and engage as a healthcare team member by demonstrating mutual respect, understanding, and values to meet patient care needs.
3.6 Communication (Communicator) – Effectively communicate verbally and nonverbally when interacting with an individual, group, or organization.

 

Requisites

Learner must complete:

  • the asychronous online portions of the program consisting of 7 self-study modules (one module released per week). Participants should expect to spend approximately 15 hours on the online material. Five of the weeks, participants will watch a video, complete an online exercise, and contribute to an online discussion thread.The other two weeks participants will watch background recordings to prepare for 'live' case discussions.
  • the 'live' virtual portions of the program will consist of 4 scheduled sessions {all are Monday nights, see schedule}, 7 hours (total) of interactive presentations, case-based learning activities, and participant discussions.

Technical Requirements

A computer with a high speed internet connection and audio is necessary. A webcam is preferred, but not required.

Instructional Design

A combination of live and online modules will encourage participants to interact with instructors and peers for an enhanced educational experience. The content will be accessible through https://canvas.instructure.com/login/canvas. The curricular basis for the program, length of modules (contact hours), and practice opportunities are outlined in the table below.

Faculty Expertise

Program faculty, led by Program Director Chris Aquilante, developed the curriculum to address the Program outcomes. Faculty divided content presentations according to their respective areas of expertise/practice. Presentation platforms, practice opportunities, assessments, and feedback were all developed by the faculty to maximize convenience of flip-classroom teaching and live team-based learning.

The primary means of communication for this program will be via the learning management system, Canvas. Throughout the entire program, the instructors are available by email or phone to answer questions and provide feedback.

Schedule of Review

Content and learning materials will be reviewed prior to and after each offering of the Activity.

Activity Evaluation

Electronic Program Evaluations will be performed at the conclusion of the program and required prior to issuing certificates and CPE.

Participant Evaluation

To receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a certificate upon completion of the program, participants must receive a 70% or better on each of the exercises, receive a 70% or better on the post-test, participate in each discussion post, attend all of the program-specific 'live' sessions. Two attempts will be allowed for each graded exercise and the post-test.

Program Practice Activities and Assessments

Each module/week runs from Wednesday through Tuesday (e.g., Oct 14 through Oct 20). See the separate schedule for weekly details and due dates. The activities and assessments in this program include:

  • Pre-Test: Complete the online pre-test prior to Oct 20. The pre-test is not graded.
  • Videos: Watch weekly online videos covering various pharmacogenomics topics.
  • 'Live' Virtual Sessions: Attend and participate in 7 hours of program-specific 'live' content online.
  • Exercises: Complete 5 online exercises (1 per week during the asychronous online portion). Each exercise is due at the end of the week.
  • Discussion Posts: Complete 5 discussion posts (1 per week during the asychronous online portion). Each discussion post is due at the end of the week.
  • Post-Test: Complete the online post-test prior to Dec 1.

CPE Credit

Successful completion of the requisites will provide 22.0 contact hours (2.2 CEU, ACPE UAN:0217-0000-19-202-B04-P) of practice-based continuing pharmacy education (15 hours home-study, 7 hours live) and a certificate to place in one’s workplace.

To achieve the stated program outcomes the activity is designed to be completed in its entirety. No continuing education credit will be given for partial completion of the activity.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
