2020 ACCP/ASHP BCGP Clinical Sessions have been approved by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties for recertification of Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacists (BCGPs). The sessions are jointly sponsored by ACCP and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

This educational series explores cutting-edge, contemporary therapeutic topics, and demonstrates scientifically sound clinical reasoning and decision-making. It employs learning activities designed to advance the participants’ skills and abilities to critically evaluate the scientific evidence and to effectively incorporate into daily practice significant findings that lead to effective and safe patient care.

The 2020 BCGP Clinical Sessions are offered in four presentations. Each presentation focuses on a different Geriatric Pharmacy topic that is highly relevant for day-to-day practice. Topics include menopause, secondary stroke prevention, mild cognitive impairment, and managing sepsis in the older adult.

Managing Sepsis in the Older Adult

Target Audience: Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacists (BCGPs) and those interested in menopause, secondary stroke prevention, mild cognitive impairment, and managing sepsis in the older adult.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of Managing Menopause: A “Hot” Topic the participant should be able to:

1. Describe the spectrum of symptoms present in a perimenopausal female.
2. Analyze the risk/benefit ratio of hormonal therapy for the management of perimenopausal symptoms.
3. Recommend therapeutic regimens for the management of perimenopausal vasomotor symptoms.
4. Select therapies for the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis taking into account guideline recommendations from the National Osteoporosis Foundation, The North American Menopause Society, and The Endocrine Society.

At the conclusion of Not So FAST: Engaging in SLOW Decision Making for Secondary Stroke Prevention the participant should be able to:

1. Evaluate literature that defines secondary stroke treatment goals, including prevention, to the care of older adults.
2. Identify clinical situations for secondary stroke prevention where life expectancy, functional status, patient preference or goals of care should override standard recommendations for screening/ treatment.
3. Recommend secondary stroke prevention strategies for older adult patients with multiple conditions, including: hypertension, dyslipidemia, atrial fibrillation, tobacco use disorder, diabetes, and hormone deficiency.

At the conclusion of An Unforgettable Session: The Pharmacist’s Role in Mild Cognitive Impairment the participant should be able to:

1. Demonstrate appropriate use of a screening tool for cognitive impairment.
2. Determine potential reversible causes of cognitive impairment, including potentially inappropriate medication use in this population.
3. Develop evidence-based and patient-centered treatment plans for older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

At the conclusion of Managing Sepsis in the Older Adult the participant should be able to:

1. Describe physiologic changes in the older adult that affect early identification of sepsis.
2. Evaluate the current literature, including the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, regarding treatment recommendations for sepsis in older adults.
3. Design a treatment strategy for sepsis in the older adult.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and American College of Clinical Pharmacy are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

ACPE Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit

Only completed assessments will be eligible for credit; no partial or incomplete assessments will be processed. You are allowed only one attempt to successfully complete this assessment.

Provided through the collaborative efforts of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and ACPE-accredited providers, the CPE Monitor Service allows you to electronically keep track of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits from ACPE-accredited providers. ACPE-accredited providers, like ACCP, are responsible for transmitting this information to NABP to be stored in the CPE Monitor system. Any posttest submitted before the BCGP posttest deadline that meets this passing point will earn BCGP recertification credits. These credits will be assigned as of the date of test submission.
