Hielscher
The target audience for the book is board-certified infectious diseases pharmacists caring for critically ill patients with infections. Infections in Critically Ill Patients contains four learning modules with a total available 16.0 continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits. Book content was developed under the leadership of Faculty Panel Chair Kayla R. Stover Hielscher, Pharm.D., FCCP, FIDSA, BCIDP, BCPS.
The first module of this IDSAP book focus on the management of sepsis and septic shock. Chapters within these modules address the role of anti-infective therapy and supportive management, including fluids, hemodynamic support, and additional therapies. The second module focuses on optimizing drug therapy in these critically ill patients, including chapters related to antimicrobial stewardship and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics with a focus on renal replacement therapy and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuits. The third module shifts to management of infections of the central nervous system, with chapters focusing on community-acquired meningitis and iatrogenic CNS infections. The final module provides opportunities for learners to apply optimal stewardship, infection prevention, and treatment principles in interactive cases focused on decreasing blood culture contamination and evaluating shorter durations of therapy in critically ill patients.
Each IDSAP release has continuing education activities that cover the most recent published data (past 3–5 years) on a specific therapeutic area or patient-care problem. This content is provided as an electronic book (interactive PDF) with high-level updates designed, as appropriate to the topic, in three formats:
- Traditional review-style chapters
- Interactive cases (a series of webpages, each introduced by a sample case-based question)
- Recorded webcast (PowerPoint presentation; includes PDF of the transcribed narrative)
All IDSAP chapters and features are fully referenced, with clickable hyperlinks to literature compilers such as PubMed. Other links provide ready access to clinical practice guidelines, official recommendations, and patient assessment tools. Graphic features focus on pivotal studies, patient care scenarios, and take-home points that can be readily integrated into clinical practice.
