An ACCP International Symposium
September 13, 2019
Governor's Hall, St. Thomas’ Hospital
London, United Kingdom
Goal
To educate and engage pharmacists in applying scientific and clinical evidence to real-world patient cases on the management of antimicrobial resistance to optimize patient care and outcomes.
Target Audience
The target audience is pharmacists and pharmacy trainees providing care to patients with infectious diseases.
Symposium Objectives
At the conclusion of the symposium, the participant should be able to:
- Discuss the evolution and current understanding of the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance
- Evaluate effectiveness of antimicrobial therapy for multi-drug resistant gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens
- Recommend management strategies for multi-drug resistant gram-positive and gram-negative infections
- Devise a monitoring plan to assess for efficacy and safety of antimicrobial therapy
- Apply contemporary clinical evidence to optimize health and patient outcomes

Session Learning Objectives
Antimicrobial Resistance: Threats and Pathogenesis
At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:
- Discuss risk factors for development of resistance within Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococci, and Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Identify significant mechanisms of resistance within Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococci, and Streptococcus pneumoniae and subsequent clinical implications
- Discuss risk factors for development of resistance within gram-negative bacteria
- Identify significant mechanisms of resistance within gram-negative bacteria with subsequent clinical implications
Multi-Drug Resistant Gram-Positive Infections: Evidence-Based Management and Outcomes
At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:
- Identify most current data regarding treatment outcomes of multi-drug resistant gram-positive infections
- Compare and contrast pharmacotherapy options using head to head data when available
- Discuss outcomes regarding monotherapy versus dual therapy of invasive Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcal infections
Multi-Drug Resistant Gram-Negative Infections: Evidence-Based Management and Outcomes
At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:
- Identify most current data regarding treatment outcomes of multi-drug resistant gram-negative infections
- Compare and contrast pharmacotherapy options using head to head data when available
- Discuss outcomes regarding monotherapy versus dual therapy of gram-negative bloodstream infections
Patient Cases: Applying the Evidence
At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:
- Formulate pharmacotherapy regimens for complicated cases involving multi-drug resistant gram-positive infections
- Develop alternative pharmacotherapy treatment plans for multi-drug resistant gram-positive infections
- Formulate pharmacotherapy regimens for complicated cases involving multi-drug resistant gram-negative infections
