A collaboration of pharmacist organizations has begun work on the joint development of petitions to the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) to recognize critical care pharmacy practice and pediatric pharmacy practice as specialties in pharmacy.
The collaborating organizations include:
- The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) for the petition to recognize critical care pharmacy practice;
- The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) for the petition to recognize pediatric pharmacy practice.
BPS issued a call for petitions in these two potential areas of specialization on May 24, 2012, following their analysis of role delineation studies it had commissioned in 2011. It is expected that both petitions will be submitted in the fourth quarter of 2012 for consideration by BPS in early 2013.
BPS has also released this week a revised “Guide for Petitioners” (http://www.bpsweb.org/pdfs/petitionersguide.pdf) that seeks to support a more streamlined and timely process for petition submission, review, and action.
