Satellite Symposia

ACCP is pleased to offer satellite symposia as a forum for the presentation of industry-sponsored educational programs during the International Congress. Acceptable educational formats for satellite symposia include presentations by speakers, panel discussions, films, and video presentations. Attendance at a satellite symposium will range from 75 to 200 attendees, depending on the topic and concurrent symposia. The following programs are available for continuing pharmacy education credit, and there is no fee to attend.

Revisiting Pain Management in Cancer Patients:
Breakthrough Pain and Its Treatments

Registration and Breakfast
6:15 a.m. – 7:00 a.m.
Satellite Symposium
7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

Location:
Rosen Centre Hotel
Junior Ballroom F (located on the first level of the Rosen Centre)

Program Overview:
Breakthrough pain in cancer patients is under-recognized and undertreated, leading to unnecessary patient suffering and high healthcare costs. A number of barriers related to both healthcare professionals and patients have been attributed to the lack of diagnosis and treatment. Pharmacists are integral members of the pain management team, so they require the latest information on breakthrough pain and its treatment in order to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to help optimize treatment outcomes.

In this program, the pathophysiology and characteristics of breakthrough pain, its prevalence, and the negative impact on cancer patients will be reviewed. In addition, the pharmacokinetics of opioids currently used to treat cancer pain and characteristics of ideal breakthrough pain treatments will be explored. Moreover, the need for new therapeutic options and data supporting their use will be discussed. Pharmacoeconomic considerations when treating patients with breakthrough pain and ways to improve collaboration with other members of the pain management team will also be assessed.

Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology and characteristics of breakthrough pain, its prevalence and the negative impact on patients;
  • Discuss the pharmacokinetics of opioids used to treat cancer pain and characteristics of ideal breakthrough pain treatments;
  • Evaluate new options for treating breakthrough pain, including investigational agents;
  • Assess pharmacoeconomic considerations when treating patients with breakthrough pain; and
  • Identify ways to improve collaboration with oncologists to optimize patient care.
