Pharmacy Residents Contribute to COVID-19 Efforts, Even When Working Remotely

As clinical trainees, pharmacy residents thrive at the bedside, where they have the opportunity to directly influence patient care. However, during this pandemic, the health and wellness of residents are being prioritized, removing some from direct patient care activities in high risk areas to protect them from exposure to COVID-19. At the University of Kentucky (UK), pharmacy residents have remained essential members of the COVID response team, even from the sidelines. ACCP member and UK resident Brooke Barlow was honored to take the lead on developing institutional guidelines for the management of COVID-19 in pediatric patients. This task was a challenge she was willing to accept knowing that it would contribute to improved patient care. Brooke comments, “I want to encourage all residents, even if they’re working from home, or remotely in some other fashion, to know that they can still make an impact on patients.” Brooke was joined in this institutional guideline development effort by others, including ACCP member Elizabeth Autry, Pharm.D., BCPPS.
