The 2009 ACCP/ESCP International Congress on Clinical Pharmacy this spring includes programming developed in part with the three current Academy Certificate Programs: Leadership and Management, Teaching and Learning, and Research and Scholarship. April 24–28, meet with colleagues from around the globe in Orlando, Florida, for a week of education and networking. Academy programming begins on Friday, April 24, with three “premeeting” symposia. The required foundational course for the Research and Scholarship Certificate Program, the Research Primer, is a full-day program designed to provide participants with an introduction to fundamental research concepts. This program will stimulate idea development for a longitudinal research project. Faculty will discuss working within research teams, scientific writing, developing a research question, and other practical aspects of the research process.
Another full day program, the Leadership Primer, is the prerequisite course for the Leadership and Management Certificate Program. Attendees will engage in discussions on the concepts and theories of organizational behavior while learning to apply situational leadership concepts to their own pharmacy practice situations. Faculty will examine the motivations and stages of change in various professional or interprofessional settings, as well as the use of principle-centered power in the professional environment.
A half-day program, Assessing Student Learning, will be held Friday afternoon and is one of the required components of the Teaching and Learning Certificate Program. The course is designed for clinicians who teach students, residents, and health care professionals in the classroom, in the clinic, or at the bedside. Participants will learn how to design and assess learning experiences using ability-based educational principles and strategies. Faculty will also present methods for enhancing student learning in both the didactic and clinical setting.
Other Academy programs during the Congress include both required and elective offerings in each Certificate Program’s curriculum. The Leadership and Management programs scheduled are The Attributes of a Leader and Getting the Right Results: Steps for Leading an Effective Team. The Attributes of a Leader is third in the series of required courses for those enrolled in the ACCP Academy Leadership program. This offering will explore contemporary literature as it examines the attributes of great leaders. Getting the Right Results is a new elective Academy course and will be taught by Todd Sorensen, Pharm.D., from the University of Minnesota. Participants in this course will learn about useful tools that can facilitate the development of an effective group, as well as the elements needed for leading a group toward achieving its desired goals.
The two Research and Scholarship Development courses scheduled during the Congress are Statistical Issues and a new elective titled Survey Methods: Applications in Educational and Health Services Research. Statistical Issues is second in the series of required courses for those enrolled in the Academy’s Research and Scholarship track. This course is designed for participants to develop competencies in research question development and analysis. The elective course will be led by Diane Beck, Pharm.D., from the University of Florida and Kathleen Bungay, Pharm.D., M.S., FCCP, from Tufts Medical Center. Participants in this session will gain practical experience in critiquing potential survey questions and assessing the quality of a survey project.
Two Teaching and Learning programs are also scheduled: Planning for Effective Teaching and Improving Medication Safety Through Interprofessional Education (IPE). Planning for Effective Teaching is first in the series of required courses in the Teaching and Learning track. This course will provide participants with a framework for promoting higher and more sustained levels of learning in the classroom. The course on IPE was developed by the Education and Training PRN; it will include both European and U.S. perspectives on this timely topic.
