Abstract
The Global Health PRN (GHPRN) embraces Koplan’s definition of global health: “Global health is an area for study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health emphasizes transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions; involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-level clinical care.”
Often, global health is thought of as something that happens across country borders. However, the GHPRN view of global health is more expansive: global health aims to achieve health equity for all people world-wide and requires transnational effort to achieve this goal. Members serve in rural and under-resourced areas throughout the US and abroad. The GHPRN has members from eight countries representing all six World Health Organization regions.
A primary charge for the GHPRN was to create mission and vision statements. The following statements were adopted. Our mission is to promote the role of clinical pharmacy through developing programs that enhance the knowledge and skills of members; fostering collaborative connections; advancing global health training opportunities; and sharing best practices for education, practice, research, and ethical engagement. We envision a healthcare landscape in which thoughtful, context-inclusive, resource-efficient care for transnational health issues is provided through interprofessional and interinstitutional partnerships.
To actualize these ideals, the GHPRN advocates availing virtual methods to access partners and collaborate, assisting researchers from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) in publishing, and considering the practicality of new technologies in LMIC and the distributive equity of those technologies. Members are committed to sharing best practices that are actionable in any limited resource setting.
