Abstract

Introduction: A 2014 query of practice department chairs at schools of pharmacy in the US found that fewer than half had written policies and procedures for conducting evaluations of faculty practice activities. A subsequent Delphi consensus in 2017 recommended that schools develop formal mechanisms for these evaluations. Specific recommendations included defining what practice-related data are collected, who is involved in the evaluation, and how data are used. We are seeking to conduct a follow-up survey to determine whether key recommendations have been implemented at schools of pharmacy and to characterize current approaches and perceptions on evaluating practice-related activities of pharmacy faculty.

Research Question or Hypothesis: We hypothesize that most schools of pharmacy have written policies and procedures for conducting practice evaluations but there is an opportunity to improve upon the evaluation content and data utilization.

Study Design: Cross-sectional study

Methods: A 25-item survey was developed by incorporating questions from the 2014 query and updating to include current practices and perspectives of interest. Questions were refined based on research team feedback and will be pilot tested by pharmacy school faculty who will not be participating as respondents. The survey will be distributed to pharmacy practice chairs at all fully accredited schools of pharmacy in the US (N=140) via email using Qualtrics®. Survey components include respondent and institutional demographics, and evaluation logistics, evaluation content, and data utilization for institutions that indicate they do have tools to collect information regarding faculty practice-related activities.

Results: Survey pilot testing and development is in progress.

Conclusion: We anticipate that this study will provide insight into the current state of evaluating practice-related activities for pharmacy school faculty. This will serve as a foundation to shape future recommendations and support to improve the quality and impact of data obtained through practice evaluations.
