Abstract

Introduction: Future healthcare providers must be familiar with climate-related health risks to individuals and communities. They must also be aware of the extent to which healthcare products and services contribute to climate change. To ensure graduates are competent in clinical practice inclusive of climate-related issues, health professions training programs worldwide must consistently offer exposure to and education in climate change and planetary health science. Currently, we do not know which health professions are being taught, what they are being taught, or how they are being taught about climate health, and what, if any, impact this has on their learning.

Research Question or Hypothesis: What learning outcomes, content, and pedagogical approaches have been developed to teach planetary health and environmental sustainability in health professions education?

Study Design: A multi-institution scoping review of published and grey literature in English language.

Methods: BPharm (Hons)/MPharm students at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, reviewed MEDLINE and CINAHL databases. A postgraduate master’s student at the University of Colorado reviewed PubMed and EMBASE databases and key conference presentations. Both arms used agreed key terms and review strategies. This poster will present only the PubMed and EMBASE results.

Results: In total, 2199 abstracts were extracted from Covidence®, a screening software for systematic reviews. After duplicates were removed, 2193 abstracts were screened, and 2114 of these were excluded. Full-text versions of 79 studies were assessed for eligibility, and 67 were excluded. 12 papers were included in the final review – 5 from medicine, 5 from pharmacy, 1 from nursing, and 1 from nutrition/dietetics.

Conclusion: This scoping review provides a partial map of the literature on pre-registrant health professions instruction associated with planetary health and environmental sustainability. The results suggest areas for potential future exploration, co-development, and research.
