Abstract

Introduction: Currently, there is no consensus on interprofessional competencies that should be practiced by all healthcare learners. The Canadian National Interprofessional Competency Framework exists, but interprofessional frameworks are only useful if they add value to existing curricula, rather than duplicate them.

Research Question or Hypothesis: What are the core interprofessional competencies from the Canadian Interprofessional Competency Framework that can be accomplished through interprofessional education (IPE) for learners in healthcare programs at the University of Ottawa?

Study Design: Modified Delphi Method.

Methods: Literature review was conducted to develop two Delphi statements for the survey. To ensure content validity, a pilot survey was sent out to a focus group. An expert panel experienced in teaching, precepting, and curriculum development was identified based on a selection criterion. Three rounds of an online survey were conducted through Qualtrics. Experts rated their level of agreement on the Delphi statements for each competency. Consensus was defined as agreement of 80% or greater. Competencies that reached consensus were included in the final list of core competencies.

Results: The expert panel was composed of 26 participants from various healthcare professions. The response rate for Rounds 1, 2, and 3 were 61% (n= 16/26), 31% (n=8/26), and 23% (n=6/26), respectively. Of the 40 competencies included in the Canadian Interprofessional Competency Framework, 25 competencies achieved consensus after two rounds of survey. There were 15 competencies did not achieve consensus.

Conclusion: This study identified 25 competencies that should be taught in an interprofessional environment, and within an academic setting. Identifying these core interprofessional competencies provides the foundation for future applications in the development of IPE.
