Abstract

Introduction: The 2023 Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines highlight pharmacist roles in asthma education, asthma inhaler technique, and adherence checking. Previous studies have demonstrated that pharmacist involvement in the care of pediatric asthma patients can have a measurable impact on asthma control; however, few studies have used the validated asthma control test and childhood asthma control test to demonstrate a benefit in an outpatient clinic setting.

Research Question or Hypothesis: What is the impact of having a pharmacist involved in outpatient pediatric appointments in improving asthma control?

Study Design: This is a single center, prospective, pre-post cohort study conducted at an outpatient pediatrician office.

Methods: Pediatric patients ages 6-17 with a diagnosis of asthma confirmed by their pediatrician are eligible for inclusion. Patients will be excluded if they decline to work with the clinical pharmacist or have another respiratory condition contributing to illness. Goal patient enrollment is 50 patients. The primary outcome is the change in asthma control test (ACT) or childhood asthma control test (C-ACT) score from baseline visit to 3-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes include patient adherence, pharmacist interventions completed, hospital admissions, Emergency Department visits, and oral steroid courses. Continuous data will be analyzed using the paired student’s t-test or Wilcoxon-signed rank test. Categorical data will be analyzed using McNemar’s test. A change in the ACT/C-ACT score of 3 points in the primary outcome will be considered clinically significant, with statistical significance set at an alpha of 0.05.

Results: This research is still in progress and results and conclusions will be reported when completed.

Conclusion: This research is still in progress and results and conclusions will be reported when completed.
