Abstract

Introduction: Pride symbols are frequently displayed in community pharmacies in the form of stickers, posters, pamphlets, flags, brochures and other visual forms. Although these symbols are often seen as a form of acceptance, members of the LGBTQIA+ community may have differing opinions on how they perceive them and may believe them to be performative or self-serving.

Research Question or Hypothesis: This study aims to explore how LGBTQIA+ people perceive the display of pride symbols within pharmacies and to determine the intentions of pharmacy owners and managers when displaying.

Study Design: This is a convergent parallel mixed methods study.

Methods: The first phase will enroll up to 30 LGBTQIA+ community members from three Canadian provinces who will partake in an audio-recorded interview to explore their expectations of pride symbols displayed in pharmacies. Interviews will be transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The second phase will involve the distribution of an online survey to community pharmacy owners and/or managers from the same provinces and will consist of questions that will explore the reasons and intentions for pride symbol display. Survey results will be summarized descriptively and compared across provinces and settings.

Results: Preliminary results include construction and piloting of the survey questionnaire and piloting of the topic guide for qualitative interviews. Results from questionnaire piloting included mapping the survey domains to the business scorecard framework, with insertion of additional questions underpinned by the minority stress model. Results from the topic guide piloting included modification of questions to include aspects relating to inclusive spaces, health services available, and linkages with LGBTQIA+ community organizations.

Conclusion: A topic guide and questionnaire have been developed to determine the intersection between LGBTQIA+ community expectations and corporate pharmacy intentions with respect to displaying pride flags in pharmacy settings. Planned procedures and analysis will occur over the coming months.
