Abstract
Introduction:
According to previous data, pharmacy practice faculty average approximately 0.5-1 publication per year. This study aims to evaluate the scholarly contributions of pharmacy practice faculty members at private colleges and schools of pharmacy (C/SOP) in more recent years compared to historical data.
Research Question or Hypothesis:
The annual rate of peer-reviewed publications by pharmacy practice faculty will be higher compared to historical data.
Study Design:
This was a retrospective observational study of peer-reviewed publication records of U.S.-based pharmacy practice faculty between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022. Pharmacy practice faculty with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree employed at private C/SOP during the study period were included. Faculty were excluded if they had a PhD degree.
Methods:
Publication records of all included pharmacy practice faculty were searched using a previously validated method of journal articles indexed in PubMed® or Google Scholar during the 5-year study period. Data collected via REDCap® data tool included faculty member demographics (e.g., years in practice, academic rank), article details (e.g., type of journal and paper), author order details (e.g., first/corresponding), and given the study period, if the article was related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Results:
A total of 60 private C/SOP have been evaluated thus far with ongoing data collection for the remaining 29 C/SOP. We have identified approximately 5,400 peer-reviewed publications during the study period to date.
Conclusion:
Data collection with assessment and analysis is currently ongoing.
