Cardiology PRN Focus Session -- Understanding the Alphabet Soup: Dissecting Device Therapies in Cardiovascular Disease

Saturday, October 15, 2022 from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM PDT at Continental Ballroom 5

Available for 1.50 hours of CPE credit
Activity Number: 0217-0000-22-156-L01-P
Activity Type: An Application-Based Activity

This will be an educational session focused on the indications and pharmacological implications for various device and surgical approaches used to manage select cardiovascular diseases. Device therapies and non-pharmacological/surgical approaches are increasingly employed to manage several cardiac disease states. All of these approaches utilize pharmacotherapy surrounding their implantation and management and it is imperative for pharmacists to have an understanding of them in order to assist with selection of pharmacological therapies and optimize outcomes. Additionally, with an understanding of the various devices and procedures, pharmacists can assist team-based care by identifying and referring those patients who may be ideal candidates. All these topics were selected based on the PRN annual needs assessment that was conducted in August 2021. The program will include a presentation on the WATCHMAN™ device and other left atrial appendage closure procedures, which are used in the management of atrial arrhythmias, to lower the risk of stroke in patients in atrial fibrillation. This device is important to understand as it has various implications for antithrombotic therapy. It will include a presentation on CardioMEMs™ and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), which are both used to improve outcomes of heart failure and have implications on pharmacological guideline directed medical therapy. It will also include a presentation on the advancements in the management of valvular heart disease, which include increasingly popular transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) devices and the MitralClip™. In recent years, there have been many advances in these procedures to improve structural heart disease in patients. These procedures also have several implications on antithrombotic therapy and symptom management, which pharmacists can help with determine optimal medication regimens and plans.

Learning Objectives
1. Identify appropriate candidates LAAO devices, CardioMEMS, CRT, TAVR, or MitralClip.
2. Design an evidence-based pharmacotherapy strategy for patients after placement of LAAO device, Watchman device, CardioMEMs, CRT, TAVR, or MitralClip.
3. Formulate drug therapy plan for symptom management following TAVR, or MitraClip.
