The American Dental Association recently released their new recommendations for pain management in dental patients. The Evidence-based clinical practice guideline for the pharmacologic management of acute dental pain in adolescents, adults, and older adults (sciencedirectassets.com) recommends the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alone or in combination with acetaminophen as first-line treatment and reserving opioids for uncontrolled pain or in patients with contraindications to NSAID use.
ACCP would like to recognize the work of member Katie J. Suda, Pharm.D., MS, FCCP, as one of the authors of the new guideline. Dr. Suda is the Associate Director, Center for Pharmaceutical Policy and Prescribing and Associate Director, Center for Research Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP), VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. ACCP supports the value of clinical pharmacists as authors on all clinical practice guidelines involving medications.
