PRN News Briefs

Adult Medicine PRN

The Adult Medicine PRN consists of practitioners, residents, and students who have an interest in shaping the practice of adult medicine in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. The PRN currently has around 1000 members with diverse research, practice, education, and training experiences. The following paragraphs highlight some of the Adult Medicine PRN’s activities and member accomplishments.

Looking toward the ACCP Annual Meeting next fall, the Adult Medicine PRN has been actively planning two focus sessions. Tentatively, the first session will focus on all things statin, and the second is a joint session with the GI/Liver/Nutrition PRN that will focus on updates in the management of hepatic disease.

The PRN has been busy developing PRN-specific awards and detailing the award process. Several award recipients were recognized at the PRN’s business meeting last fall. Details can be found below.

Clinical Administration PRN

The Clinical Administration PRN continues to grow (now at 387 members) and is actively pursuing a list of endeavors for 2013. The Programming/Focus Session Committee is working to address one of the main concerns voiced by members in our most recent survey. The program is titled “Advancing the Pharmacy Practice Model Through Effective Staff Development Strategies.”

The Research and Scholarship Committee is working on an application for a scholarship for students or residents to travel to the ACCP Annual Meeting and possibly to reimburse some BPS examinations. Students are requesting a more active role in the PRN. This year was no exception, with three students and one resident attending the PRN meeting. It is exciting to see recent graduates excited about leadership in the clinical administration arena. The PRN is excited to continue developing young leaders through involvement in activities of the PRN.

The PRN has renewed dialogue with the Leadership Academy and is actively engaged in seeking topics, editors, and names of potential speakers for the Academy Newsletter and Certificate Program.

Critical Care PRN

Update: Issues of Interest to Membership

Provided by: Curtis Haas, Pharm.D., BCPS; and Stacy Voils, Pharm.D., BCPS

BPS Approves Critical Care Pharmacy as New Specialty BPS has announced the approval of critical care pharmacy as a new specialty. The approval of pediatric pharmacy as a specialty was announced at the same time (see related article on page 3). As most of you know, BPS conducted a role delineation study of critical care pharmacy practice and subsequently issued a request for petition last year. ACCP, ASHP, and APhA collaborated on developing the petition that was submitted to BPS in November 2012. BPS held open hearings regarding the petition at the Midyear Clinical Meeting, a transcript of which is available at the BPS Web site ().

Medicare benefit initiative to recognize clinical pharmacists’ direct patient care services (“provider status”)

Last December, ACCP announced the launch of a formal initiative to pursue recognition of direct patient care (DPC) services by clinical pharmacists as a covered benefit under the Medicare program (www.accp.com/report/?iss=1212&art=1). The framework of this initiative should resonate well with critical care pharmacists because it is focused on DPC (assessment of patients and their pharmacotherapy needs; initiation, modification, or discontinuation of patient-specific drug therapy; and ongoing monitoring and follow-up) as members of a team providing interdisciplinary patient care. This is the essence of the model of the clinical pharmacist’s role as a member of the critical care patient care team, which the specialty has embraced for more than 2 decades. As our health care delivery system evolves under health care reform, it is more important than ever that clinical pharmacy and the value we bring to patient care are recognized by CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) and other payers. Because fee-for-service reimbursement, as we know it, is going away, it is difficult to know what might evolve as the financial impact of “provider status,” but it is important that clinical pharmacy have a “seat at the table” in a reformed system of health care delivery. It is also imperative that we articulate that this initiative is not about pharmacy or pharmacists, but about patients. We believe the active engagement of clinical pharmacists on the patient care team improves quality and outcomes by “getting the medications right.”

ACCP has retained the Federal Group, a Washington consulting firm with a track record in lobbying, for provider recognition. The Federal Group will provide strategic government relations and advocacy services to assist ACCP in pursuing this goal. It will be a potentially long and challenging path to travel, but ACCP has defined this as our most important policy and advocacy agenda item. Please take a few minutes and read the related articles in the December and January ACCP Reports, which include an FAQ document to help clearly define the goals and principles underlying this effort.

Student Chapter Recognition

For those of you in academia (or students), the Board of Regents  made an important announcement after the October board meeting. ACCP has decided to create a mechanism for the formal recognition of student chapters. Students make up the fastest-growing membership category in ACCP, and the student members have made it clear to the board that recognition of student chapters on school campuses is very important to them. At the request of the Board of Regents, ACCP staff are currently working on the details of chapter recognition, which should be made public sometime later this year, together with the time line for implementation. This creates an exciting opportunity to spread the word about the benefits of ACCP membership to more students and to offer options for local engagement in a chapter of a national pharmacy organization that is focused on developing, advancing, and positioning clinical pharmacists. The number of student chapters is expected to increase steadily in the next few years, which will further promote the growth of our student membership. This is not only great for the current vitality of the organization, but is also an investment in the future of the organization and the discipline of clinical pharmacy.

Education and Training PRN

The Education and Training PRN (EDTR) has grown to more than 450 members who continue to advance the PRN’s mission of promoting dialogue and interaction to develop programs that enhance the knowledge and skills needed to provide education and training within clinical pharmacy. The PRN is happy to share the many accomplishments of its members and looks forward to another productive year.

The EDTR once again hosted the mock interviews for students and residents during the 2012 ACCP Annual Meeting. Sixty interviewees took advantage of this opportunity to learn key interviewing skills from clinical faculty and practitioners in preparation for residency or initial career position interviews. Forty-two interviewers graciously volunteered their time to make this event a success. Most participants were able to go through two or three rounds of mock interviews to receive valuable feedback from several interviewers.

During the EDTR business meeting, members also had the opportunity to hear from Janet Teeters, director of accreditation services at ASHP, who provided a very informative update regarding changes to pharmacy-specific duty hours, board certification required for PGY2 residency program directors, the post-Match process, and PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application).

Our Scholarly Activities Committee is continuing its work on a book that will offer useful teaching tips for clinical faculty and preceptors. A special thanks to Tina Denetclaw for her continued leadership on this important project.

At the upcoming ACCP Spring Updates in Therapeutics® meeting in Reno, Nevada, the EDTR will host a networking breakfast on Sunday, April 21, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. This will provide a good opportunity to meet informally with other PRN members to exchange ideas related to teaching and learning.

The EDTR is proud of its growing membership and would like to continue expanding. We encourage ACCP members who are interested in promoting our mission to join the EDTR PRN.

Endocrine and Metabolism PRN

The Endocrine and Metabolism PRN is composed of members from a variety of practice settings. The PRN was formed to achieve the following goals and objectives: (1) provide an opportunity for pharmacists with an interest in endocrine and metabolism disorders to promote practice, research, and education in these areas; (2) provide a mechanism for members with similar interests to meet during ACCP meetings to network, problem solve, and discuss professional issues and opportunities; and (3) promote practice involvement; educational needs of health care professionals, students, and patients; and research activities in the areas of endocrinology and metabolism that may be favorably affected by this ACCP PRN effort.

During the past 6 months, some notable member accomplishments are as follows.

Pediatrics PRN

Chair:   Hanna Phan, Pharm.D., BCPS
Immediate Past Chair:  Kelly Bobo, Pharm.D., BCPS
Chair-Elect:  Barnabas John, Pharm.D., BPCS
Secretary:  Audrey Kennedy, Pharm.D., BCPS
The Pediatrics PRN is pleased to report the activities of its committees and to recognize the following accomplishments of its members.

Recent PRN Activity

Collaboration Committee (Chair: Joseph LaRochelle) – The efforts of the committee (which was led by Richard Parrish for this initial manuscript) have resulted in a dual publication in Pharmacotherapy and Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics (see listing below). The collaboration committee has been hard at work designing a second paper that will focus on the clinical specialist’s role in the care of pediatric patients. This 18-person team has divided the main sections of the paper and is in the process of writing them. We have designed in the plan an editorial phase, which will include people with expertise in editing. After the editing phase, we will add the final touches to the paper and prepare for the final version. We have included an internal peer-review process that will provide comments to be addressed in the paper before submission to the journal.

Education Committee (Chair: Kelly Bobo)The Education Committee continues to work on developing and submitting session proposals for the ACCP Annual Meeting each year.

Nominations Committee (Chair: Tracy Hagemann)Continuing to encourage membership nominations for recognition within ACCP and candidates for office starting fall 2013. This year, we will be electing a new chair-elect (2-year term) and secretary (2-year term).

Student and Resident Committee (Chair: Chasity Shelton)This is a new committee formed as part of the initiative to increase student and resident interest in pediatrics and participation in the Pediatrics PRN. Programs are currently being developed to provide mentorship and networking opportunities for students and residents.

Travel Award Committee (Chair: Hanna Phan)Two awards will be available for application for 2013. These awards are for resident and student pediatric PRN members who are presenting (e.g., poster) at the ACCP Annual Meeting. Recipients of the award will be recognized at the annual PRN business meeting and will present their projects to those in attendance.
