BPS Approves Petitions Recognizing Pediatrics and Critical Care as New Specialties

The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) Board of Directors has approved petitions to recognize the areas of pediatric pharmacy practice and critical care pharmacy practice as specialties in pharmacy. The BPS announcement is available at http://www.bpsweb.org/news/pr_041513.cfm. ACCP, working collaboratively with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG), developed the petition to recognize pediatric pharmacy practice. For the critical care petition, ACCP partnered with APhA and ASHP. In both cases, the petitions were developed by a working group consisting of a practitioner-clinician member in the specialized area of practice and a member of the professional staff from each organization. Both petitions were submitted to BPS in November 2012. BPS will now begin the process of forming a specialty council for each new specialty, which will be charged with developing the certification examination, proposing eligibility criteria for pharmacists to take the examination, and managing other required details for BPS to consider in implementing the certification processes. Examinations in both specialties will be available as early as 2015. Further information about the time line and process can be found during the next few weeks on the BPS Web site (www.bpsweb.org).
