Adult Medicine PRN

Introduction:

The Adult Medicine PRN consists of practitioners, residents, and students who share an interest in shaping the practice of adult medicine through research and practice in a variety of settings. The following paragraphs highlight some of the Adult Medicine PRN’s activities and member accomplishments.

Looking toward the ACCP Annual Meeting this fall, the Adult Medicine PRN Programming Committee has been actively planning a focus session highlighting the optimal use of dual antiplatelet therapy. Practitioners will have the opportunity to review current evidence regarding indications for antiplatelet therapy and strategies for preventing complications from treatment.

The PRN Archives Committee has been developing revised online content and ensuring that the content and format are best suited for our members. Our Training and Travel Awards Committee continues to award students and new practitioners with travel awards for the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting. The Nominations Committee has also reviewed applications and presented two awards to exceptional members this year. These recipients were recognized at the PRN’s business meeting last fall. Details can be found below.

Ambulatory Care PRN

Introduction:

The Ambulatory Care PRN motto for this year is “Building Better.” Membership in the Ambulatory Care PRN has now reached 1800 members! Our committee chairs and members have been challenged with exploring new and innovative ways to serve  the Ambulatory Care PRN members. The committees were slightly restructured this year, with the Student/Resident Committee being divided into an individual Student Committee and an individual Resident Committee, with the hope of increasing and improving student and resident involvement in the PRN. The Education Committee developed a webinar for students and residents to help them understand and improve their interviewing skills for their first residency or professional position. In addition, the Ambulatory Care PRN is offering 10 ACCP Academy registrations for its members. The PRN officers and committee chairs have been meeting periodically to provide updates to the PRN regarding committee activities; these business minutes can be located on the ACCP Ambulatory Care PRN Web page.

Clinical Administration PRN

The Clinical Administration PRN, which continues to grow, is now at an all-time high of 430 members. Since the Annual Meeting, the PRN has been actively pursuing a list of endeavors for 2014. Members are actively engaged in committees, including the Nominations Committee, the Travel Awards Committee, and the Annual Meeting Focus Session Planning Committee.

What’s New?

This year, the Clinical Administration PRN will offer two new travel scholarships of $500 each. The Clinical Administration PRN Travel Award is intended to provide partial financial support for students, residents, or fellows interested in administrative career paths to attend the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting.

What’s All the Buzz About?

The Annual Meeting Focus Session Planning Committee has been developing a focus session that will meet the needs voiced by our members. At the Annual Meeting, the PRN will sponsor a focus session in which experts around the country will share how they have successfully used the services of pharmacy students in innovative ways to improve medication-related key performance indicators.

Challenge to Fellow PRNs

Clinical Administration PRN members have shown their support of the ACCP-PAC Committee by challenging each other to contribute to the ACCP-PAC. The goal is to have contributions from 50 members before the Annual Meeting. Contributions, even those as small as the cost of a cup of coffee per member, will help show that a high percentage of ACCP members are dedicated to the success of the Medicare Initiative. The Clinical Administration PRN would like to challenge other PRNs to do the same. The best show of support at this time from the ACCP membership is the percentage of members contributing to the PAC.

Education and Training PRN

The Education and Training (EDTR) PRN has grown to more than 496 members. Its mission is to promote dialogue and interaction in order to develop programs that enhance the knowledge and skills needed to provide education and training within clinical pharmacy. The PRN is pleased to share the many accomplishments of its members as we look forward to another productive year.

The EDTR PRN was once again the host of mock interviews for students and residents attending the 2013 Annual Meeting in Albuquerque. Fifty-two interviewees took advantage of this opportunity to learn key interviewing skills from clinical faculty and practitioners in preparation for residency or initial career position interviews. Thirty-seven interviewers graciously volunteered their time to make this event a success. Most participants were able to go through two rounds of mock interviews to receive valuable feedback from multiple interviewers. We look forward to offering this activity at the 2014 meeting and ask that you encourage students and residents attending the meeting to take advantage of this opportunity.

The PRN also held its first silent auction during its annual business meeting. More than $600 was raised, which will be used to increase the EDTR PRN Student/Resident Travel Scholarships from two to three awards for the upcoming year. We hope to make this an annual event so that we can continue to increase our support of student and resident members. The PRN would like to thank the following members for their generous donations: P. Brandon Bookstaver, Sherry Brown, Sandra Caballero, Lauren Czosnowski, Gloria Meredith, Sarah Nisly, Beth H. Resman-Targoff, Jim Scott, Karen Shapiro, and Rebecca Sleeper.

The Student and Postgraduate Trainee Support Committee has worked with the PRN membership to increase the EDTR PRN travel awards to three (two students and one postgraduate trainee) for the 2014 Annual Meeting. Watch the EDTR PRN e-mail list, as well as the Student and Resident sections of ACCP’s Web site, for additional information.

The Scholarly Activities Committee is pleased to be offering enduring programs on a YouTube channel created specifically for the EDTR PRN. The first program, “Primer on Psychometric Issues with Educational Testing” by Michael J. Peters, Pharm.D., MEd, BCPS, will be available for viewing at your convenience by a link available through the PRN homepage. Information regarding how to access the program will be circulated through the PRN’s e-mail list, but you may also contact Tina Denetclaw (chair of the Scholarly Activities Committee), Danny Riche (vice chair of the Scholarly Activities Committee), or any of the PRN officers for additional information. Continue to watch the EDTR PRN e-mail list for information concerning additional programs to be offered in the future.

The ACCP Updates in Therapeutics® meeting will host PRN networking mornings, as in past years. If you are attending the spring Updates in Therapeutics® or Academy sessions, please stop by on either Saturday or Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to visit with PRN officers. Please also encourage nonmembers to join us for this networking session to learn more about the PRN. Consult the meeting programming calendar for more information regarding location.

The EDTR is proud of its growing membership, and the PRN would like to continue expanding. We encourage ACCP members who are interested in promoting our mission to join the EDTR PRN and take an active role on a committee.

The CODE Program encourages idea sharing and fosters professional growth by forming meaningful partnerships among emergency medicine pharmacists. The next matching process will occur in April 2014. The CODE Committee is developing a survey that will help identify aspects of the program that we can improve on, and we are excited about the positive feedback we have received so far.

Programming Committee

After the ACCP Annual Meeting last fall, the Programming Committee quickly began developing the focus session for our meeting next fall in Austin. Our plan is to focus on a comprehensive approach to the management of toxicologic emergencies as they pertain to wilderness medicine and illicit drug use, both in the prehospital field and in the emergency department.

Travel Award Committee

The Travel Award Committee will award a Student and Resident Research Travel Award this year to help support the costs of travel and attendance at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting. More information can be found at www.accp.com within the PRN documents of the EMED PRN section (www.accp.com/docs/prns/emed/Travel_Award_-_EMED_PRN.pdf). Recipients will present their research at the Emergency Medicine PRN Business Meeting and Networking Forum at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.

Justification Task Force

The Justification Task Force continues its mission to provide a framework for the development of an optimal business and practice model for the emergency department. After developing an outline and structure for this framework in its inaugural year, task force members have been working diligently to elaborate on these building blocks this year. Using an extensive database of primary literature to support recommendations, task force members anticipate that an initial draft of this framework will be completed by the end of the year.

Student Task Force

The Student Task Force is finalizing a survey that will be sent to all student members of the ACCP EMED PRN to gauge student interest in a student committee. The task force is also creating a framework for an official PRN committee.

Nephrology PRN

Introduction:

The Nephrology PRN has been active in a broad range of activities this year. One major accomplishment is the PRN’s involvement in the Kidney Health Initiative (KHI). The KHI is an initiative developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Society of Nephrology to advance the scientific understanding of the kidney health and patient safety implications of new and existing medical products. The KHI was also created to foster the development of therapies for diseases that affect the kidney by creating a collaborative environment in which the FDA and the greater nephrology community can interact to optimize the evaluation of drugs, devices, biologics, and food products. The ACCP Nephrology PRN will serve as a pioneer member of the KHI. Although many stakeholder groups are represented in the KHI, ours is the only pharmacy group.

Current Officers

Chair (2013–2014)

Bob John, Pharm.D., BCPS

Immediate Past Chair

Hanna Phan, Pharm.D., BCPS

Chair-Elect

Joseph LaRochelle, Pharm.D.

Secretary

Janie Robles, Pharm.D.

Collaboration Committee (Chair: Joseph LaRochelle)

The Collaboration Committee members have, starting at their in-person meeting during the ACCP Annual Meeting, developed an extensive plan for a manuscript tentatively titled “The Role of the Clinical Pharmacist in Pediatric Care.” The committee also held a meeting at the PPAG conference this year to discuss the work. This 18-member committee has outlined and divided out the sections of the paper and is currently writing and editing the extensive work. The paper will undergo a series of edits by experienced editors as well as a “blinded-review” process before being submitted to leading journals. It is hoped that the leading pharmacy and pediatric organizations support this document. The ultimate goal of this paper is to provide a scope of practice for pediatric pharmacists and to provide documentation for health care professionals and administration regarding  the utility of clinical pharmacists in the care of pediatric patients.

Education Committee (Chair: Christina Piro)

The committee successfully coordinated the Annual Meeting PRN focus session titled “Little Patients, Big Dilemmas.” This session will include updates on anticoagulation in pediatric patients and alternative drug therapy routes in the pediatric emergency department. The Education Committee continues to work on developing and submitting session proposals for the ACCP Annual Meeting each year. If you have any suggestions for future session topics, please contact the committee.

Nominations Committee (Chair: Tracy Hagemann)

We are continuing to encourage membership nominations for recognition within ACCP and candidates for office starting in fall 2014 (for chair-elect, 2-year term).

Student and Resident Committee (Chair: Chasity Shelton)

This committee is developing a survey to administer to student/resident/fellow members to determine their needs for this committee. The committee is planning to query the PRN members to develop a list of people interested in serving as a mentor to these student/resident/fellow members. Mentorship in this program would be informal (mostly to provide guidance and steer students in the right direction according to their interests and career goals; communication could be established and maintained by e-mail/telephone).

Travel Award Committee (Chair: Hanna Phan)

Two awards were offered for application in 2013. These awards were for resident and student Pediatric PRN members who were presenting (e.g., poster) at the 2013 ACCP Annual Meeting. Recipients of the award are recognized at the PRN annual business meeting, where recipients present their projects to those in attendance. This past year, we had one award recipient, Ms. K. Ashley Jones, a Pharm.D. Candidate (2014), from Auburn University. She presented her project, “The impact of acid suppression therapy on iron supplementation in the pediatric intensive care unit,” as part of our Pediatrics PRN annual business meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We will once again be able to offer two travel awards for the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting, and we have increased the amount of the award.

Research Committee (Chair: Varsha Bhatt-Mehta)

This is the first year for the Research Committee, which had several meetings to define the charges for the committee and to develop a charter, which is currently under review. The goal of the Pediatrics PRN PBRN is to work under the umbrella of this parent ACCP PBRN and perform practice-based, patient outcomes–oriented research using the talent within the PRN to further pediatric pharmacotherapy research and the goals of the ACCP PBRN by closely collaborating with it and supporting its activities.

Pharmaceutical Industry PRN

Introduction (recent activities, etc.):

The Pharmaceutical Industry PRN had a successful meeting at the ACCP Annual Meeting in Albuquerque on October 13, 2013, when new officers Sandra Chase (chair), Maggie Murphy (chair-elect), and Brian Simmons (secretary/treasurer) were sworn in. Rachel Couchenour is still providing excellent leadership as the PRN past chair. During the meeting, a discussion ensued with the PRN leadership team and other members regarding potential collaboration with the Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program with the hope of planning an educational event at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting for students and residents on career opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry. This project is ongoing and represents the first step in building a stronger partnership with new pharmacy graduates within the pharmaceutical and biotechnologic industries and our PRN. If you would like more information or have suggestions on how to bring students into the fold, please contact any of your PRN officers!

In addition, programming for the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting by the Pharmaceutical Industry PRN will be on “The Drug Approval Process: Changes, Challenges, and How Clinical Pharmacists Can Get Involved.” This session will not only discuss changes in the drug development process, but also why drugs fail in late-stage development. These topics will then be incorporated into an interactive panel discussion with clinical pharmacists both in the pharmaceutical industry and in clinical practice regarding how we can work together to develop and conduct clinical trials. If you have any suggestions for potential speakers or if you would like to be involved, please contact officers Drs. Chase, Murphy or Simmons.

Promotion:

Rachel Couchenour, Pharm.D. (Pharmaceutical Industry PRN past chair): Promoted from director to senior director of medical affairs at Chelsea Therapeutics. Dr. Couchenour is based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
