Fall 2016 PRN Report

We want to share a quick update on select programs, activities, and successes of the Research Institute. We also invite you to visit our website (www.accpri.org) for updates and program announcements. Thank you for supporting the ACCP Research Institute.

Who Joins the ACCP PBRN?

Do you routinely provide direct patient care? Do you often ponder an “I wonder” clinical question? Would you like to participate in collaborative clinical research? The ACCP Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) may be the perfect solution. The PBRN is an ever-growing group of clinical pharmacists who practice in a variety of settings from all 50 states. The PBRN affords clinicians the ability to conveniently and expeditiously pool patient care experiences into large-enough samples to answer important clinical questions.

The ACCP PBRN continues to grow since its launch in February 2009. We have over 1000 members to date, including members who belong to existing PRNs and whose data are shown below. Whether you are a clinician who desires to contribute to network research studies, an investigator who wants to lead a collaborative project with the network, or both, we encourage you to join us and get involved in your network!

Joining the ACCP PBRN is free to all ACCP members. You can join the PBRN as an individual or as part of an existing network by completing our online registry at www.accpri.org/pbrn/registration.aspx.

What’s Going On in the PBRN?

We invite you to browse our “Now Recruiting” and “Ongoing” studies by visiting our website (www.accpri.org/pbrn/researchProjects.aspx) or share your idea for a potential PBRN study at any time (www.accpri.org/pbrn/StudySuggest.aspx). You can also sign up to receive e-mail notifications about future studies.

Calling All Researchers!

The ACCP PBRN is interested in establishing collaborative research efforts with both the ACCP PBRN and other external investigators. If you have a funded project or are applying for funding and are interested in collaborating with the ACCP PBRN, we invite you to complete our Project Concept Description Template at www.accpri.org/pbrn/partner.aspx. Please contact PBRN staff with any questions, or for assistance with developing a clinical question into a PBRN study, at (913) 492-3311 or [email protected].

ACCP RI Congratulates 2016 Futures Grants Program Awardees

The ACCP Research Institute (RI) Frontiers Fund supports clinical pharmacy researcher development and clinical pharmacy research advancement. Through its Futures Grants Program, the RI Board of Trustees is especially interested in supporting the development of research skills among student, trainee, and early-career ACCP members, with a goal of establishing sustained interest and careers in clinical pharmacy research.

This year, the ACCP RI received 58 applications for its mentored research funding program. Each application was reviewed by an expert panel according to the program’s core review criteria. The ACCP RI congratulates the 2016 Futures Grants Program awardees.

Coming Soon: Plan Your “Walk-Rounds” Through the Scientific Poster Presentations

Many PRNs conduct walk-rounds during the Scientific Poster Presentations at ACCP’s Annual Meeting each year. In these walk-rounds, small groups of PRN members move through preselected posters and discuss the presentations’ findings and implications with the authors. This year, the Research Institute (RI) is expanding the numbers and types of resources it offers to help PRNs plan their walk-rounds at the 2016 ACCP Annual Meeting in Hollywood, Florida. In addition to poster hall maps and poster session schedules, the RI will provide each PRN with a list of posters for which respective PRN members are named as presenting authors or coauthors. For more information on how PRNs can obtain a list of their members’ posters, please contact Shelly Enders ([email protected]).

Investigator Development

Mentored Research Investigator Training (MeRIT) Program

The Research Institute is pleased to again offer this one-of-a-kind training program designed to assist pharmacists in developing the abilities necessary to conduct investigator-initiated research, either independently as a principal investigator or as an active coinvestigator within a research team. Ideal candidates for the MeRIT Program are pharmacy faculty or practitioners with limited research experience who:

  • are committed to incorporating research into their professional careers,
  • are interested in generating research themes or obtaining preliminary data for larger funding opportunities, and
  • aspire to be active principal investigators or coinvestigators within a research team.

MeRIT is a 2-year longitudinal program that uses a combination of live and virtual teaching and mentoring methods to provide trainees with the support and education they need throughout the research experience (i.e., from idea, proposal development, funding application, and project completion to presentation and publication). Be sure to visit the 2015 MeRIT participants’ completed research posters and the 2016 MeRIT participants’ research design posters during the Annual Meeting on Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., in the Grand Ballroom.

The application period for the 2017 MeRIT Program will open in November 2016, with letters of intent due February 28 and full applications due March 31. The primer program will be held June 26–30, 2017, on the campus of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Focused Investigator Training (FIT) Program

The Research Institute’s (RI’s) annual flagship pharmacist investigator training program continues June 26–30, 2017, at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. If you are preparing to submit (or resubmit) a research proposal to NIH or other major foundation/organization funding source, FIT should be on your agenda.

This 5-day, intensive, hands-on program has a strong history of participant success, as it pairs experienced and funded faculty mentors with investigator-participants. The program is geared to fine-tune R-type investigator-initiated proposals and K-type career development awards. The ideal applicant is a mid-career, fellowship-trained, tenure-track or research-focused pharmacist. The application period for the 2017 FIT Program will open in November 2016, with letters of intent due February 28 and full applications due March 31.

Feedback from a past FIT participant – “The focused and protected time to work on my proposal and receive expert/critical feedback on my proposal were instrumental to my receiving funding and I’ve not been able to reproduce the same experience outside of the FIT program.”

More information on the MeRIT and FIT programs is available at the RI’s Open House on Tuesday, October 25, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., in Great Hall 5, or on the RI’s website at www.accpri.org/investigator.
