Endocrine and Metabolism PRN

The Endocrine and Metabolism PRN consists of pharmacists and student pharmacists from a variety of practice settings. The PRN was formed to achieve the following goals and objectives: (1) provide an opportunity for pharmacists with an interest in endocrine and metabolism disorders to promote practice, research, and education in these areas; (2) provide a mechanism for members with similar interests to meet during ACCP meetings to network, problem solve, and discuss professional issues and opportunities; and (3) promote practice involvement; educational needs of health care professionals, students, and patients; and research activities in the areas of endocrinology and metabolism that may be favorably affected by this ACCP PRN effort. During the past 6 months, notable member accomplishments include the following.

Hematology/Oncology PRN

The Hematology/Oncology PRN continues to provide a forum for hematology/oncology pharmacists to network and collaborate on scientific, educational, and political issues affecting clinical practice, teaching, and research. The PRN has 795 members, with trainees (students and residents) making up almost 50% of the membership.
At the 2017 Annual Meeting, the PRN hosted resident and student travel awardees. Because of increased student membership and the desire for more opportunities to connect, the second half of the PRN meeting served as a networking session focused on members’ clinical and research activities. The PRN was asked to increase student involvement; therefore, the PRN has created activities geared toward trainees. The PRN also formed a committee within, which includes trainees, to help the PRN officers complete their initiatives.
The PRN has made plans to donate to the Frontiers Fund, and nominations for 2018 awards have been submitted. Plans for PRN collaboration are under way for the 2018 PRN focus session.

Pain and Palliative Care PRN

Sincerest congratulations to our recently elected Chair-Elect, Kat Walker, and Secretary-Treasurer, Nhi Tran! Kat and Nhi will begin their terms following the Global Conference Meeting in October.

Experts in Training Newsletter

We have an opportunity as a PRN to share more about ourselves and include a brief article in theresident and fellow newsletter that relates to current issues in our field. Our last article was regarding opioid stewardship and the one prior addressed opioid induced constipation. The PRN would love to open up this opportunity to a learner and facilitator/preceptor. Please email Stephanie Abel ([email protected])if you are interested.

Global Conference Meeting

The ACCP Global Conference in Seattle, WA is swiftly approaching (October 20 – 23).

Our PRN business meeting is Sunday the 21st from 6:30 – 8:30 pm in the Sheraton Seattle Hotel (conference hotel), second floor, Aspen room. Please let me know if you have an item you’d like to be considered for the agenda of this meeting. Additionally, if you cannot attend but would like a topic to be considered for next year’s focus session discussion, please email me. Congratulations to the following learners who were selected for the Pain and Palliative Care PRN travel awards and will be presenting at the business meeting:

Brittany Faley, PharmD Candidate 2019, University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Brittany will be presenting on "Antimicrobial Stewardship in Palliative Care"

Krysta Walter, PharmD Candidate 2019, University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. Krysta will be presenting on "Medication Regimen Complexity in Palliative Care Patients"

Our PRN Focus Session, “Opioid Stewardship – A Quality Improvement Approach”, is on Tuesday the 23rd from 1:15 – 2:45 pm at the Washington State Conference Center, Level Three, Tahoma 1 & 2.

Comprehensive meeting information may be found by clicking here.

Pediatrics PRN

Several Pediatrics PRN subcommittees are developing new programming and opportunities for its members.
The Pediatrics PRN Education Committee is organizing the resident/fellow journal clubs for next year. The journal clubs are open to any resident or fellow member of ACCP who would like the opportunity to present on a pediatric topic nationally. The journal clubs will be held at 3 p.m. (EST) on the below dates. Application deadlines are given below. Contact Samie Sabet for more information at [email protected].

Journal Club Date Application Due Date
Oct 16, 2018 Aug 20, 2018
Jan 15, 2019 Nov 19, 2018
Apr 2, 2019 Feb 4, 2019

The Pediatrics PRN focus session at the 2018 ACCP Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy in Seattle, Washington, will be held Monday, October 22, at 1:45 p.m. The 90-minute session, “Growing Pains: Pediatric Pain Management,” will feature three speakers discussing various aspects of acute and chronic pain management in pediatric patients. Please join the PRN membership for this session.
The PRN is always looking for new team members. If you are interested in joining the PRN’s committee, please reach out to Samie Sabet ([email protected]) or Elizabeth Goswami ([email protected]).
The Pediatrics PRN Research Committee continues to support PRN members in their research and scholarly endeavors. Committee members are also organizing pediatric poster rounds at the Global Conference.
The Pediatrics PRN Travel Awards Committee will provide two awards again this year, one for students and one for residents.
The Social Media Committee is sharing what is happening and coming up in the Pediatrics PRN through Facebook and Twitter as well as the PRN’s website. The PRN is also looking for ways to engage its members through spotlights and clinical pearls. One initiative to help with this involves selecting a resident member liaison for the committee. This position will give a resident the opportunity to take on a leadership role in the PRN as well as help the chair with the latest and greatest ways to share information through social media. The liaison will be announced in September 2018.
The Nominations Committee, together with the ACCP staff, finalized the officer nomination and election process for 2018–2019. In addition, this will be the second year for the Pediatrics PRN awards; the PRN Achievement Award, given to an individual demonstrating leadership and a high level of contribution to pediatric practice and the PRN; and the Outstanding Practitioner Award, given to an individual showing innovative and excellence in providing clinical pediatric pharmacy services. Awardees will be selected by a panel of prior award winners and recognized at the 2018 Global Conference. The PRN looks forward to celebrating these achievements of its members.
