Research Institute Report

The ACCP Research Institute is pleased to report updates to PRN members and leadership with respect to the ACCP PBRN and investigator development programs.

ACCP PBRN

The ACCP PBRN continues to grow since its launch in February 2009. We have more than 600 members to date, including members who have joined through existing PBRNs and whose data are not shown below. Table 1 below lists current ACCP PBRN members by PRN.

If you are new to PBRN research, you will find FAQs and specific information regarding the mission, vision, and features unique to the ACCP PBRN at http://www.accpri.org/pbrn/whyJoin.aspx. If you are providing direct patient care or have access to patients for research purposes, the ACCP PBRN invites you to join. Remember, no research experience is necessary to join the ACCP PBRN. Go to www.accpri.org/pbrn to join.

MEDAP Study Launch

The ACCP PBRN plans to launch its first project soon, called the MEDAP (Medication Error Detection, Amelioration, and Prevention) Study. All ACCP PBRN members will be eligible to participate in this project. The ACCP PBRN has received IRB approval, and preparations are under way for study launch later this year.... With the Cerner software donation (see story in ACCP Report, September 2009), the ACCP PBRN is well suited to meet the demands of a large network.

Live MEDAP Study Training in Charlotte

If you are attending the Spring Forum in Charlotte, plan to join us for two informational sessions on the MEDAP Study: Sunday, April 25, at 1:00 p.m., or Monday, April 26, at 11:30 a.m. in Room 214 of the Charlotte Convention Center. We will host walkthroughs of our data collection process and answer your questions about the study.

2011 Focused Investigator Training Program

The Focused Investigator Training (FIT) Program will be held June 11–17, 2010, at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in Tucson. The FIT Program is an annual, intensive, 1-week, hands-on program for experienced investigators who have not yet been awarded significant peer-reviewed extramural funding as a principal investigator. Through this mentored program, research-track faculty will take necessary steps toward preparing a K, R, or similar investigator-initiated application for submission to the NIH or other major funding source. Online applications are currently being accepted.

We are pleased to report that two FIT attendees have already received federal grants, and several others are pending. This program works! (See ACCP Report, August 2009.)

Apply Now for the PPD Bioanalytical Fluid and Tissue Grant Award

Do you have stored research samples and no money or resources to do the analysis? Apply for the PPD award through the ACCP Research Institute. Through this investigator development award, PPD grant award winners are reimbursed for their transportation and housing costs while performing sample analysis at the facility, provided by PPD, an international contract research organization. The grant covers the costs associated with the actual sample analyses and permits members to learn in a state-of-the-art laboratory setting under experts in bioanalytical methods. The Research Institute is pleased to announce the continued availability of funding opportunities for both full and associate ACCP members in 2010. Applications will remain open until 2010 funding is depleted.

Download an application from www.accpri.org and apply today.

Support the Frontiers Fund

The financial support needed to operate a PBRN is substantial. Although cost estimates vary based on the structure and complexity of each PBRN, we estimate that the ACCP PBRN infrastructure will cost more than $180,000 in 2010 alone. This is similar to other PBRNs across the country and does not take into account study-specific costs.

The Research Institute needs your financial support to bring the ACCP PBRN forward. If every current ACCP PBRN member donated $100, we could easily raise $60,000.

Help us “Go Forward” by making a personal tax-deductible contribution in 2010 to the Frontiers Fund. Online donations can be made at http://www.accpri.org.
