An Update on JACCP

Thank you!

Written by Jerry L. Bauman, Pharm.D., FCCP
Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Editor-in-Chief

Most of us get daily e-mails asking us to contribute papers to oddly titled journals we have never heard of. And most of us have witnessed the large increase in biomedical journals in the past decade. When the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (JACCP) was initiated in 2018, I heard some people say with tongue in cheek, “Gee, that’s what we need – another new journal.” I’m not sure that even our publisher thought it was a good idea. And I was secretly hoping I wouldn’t have to write a large portion of JACCP’s contents. Well, apparently, clinical pharmacists did indeed need another journal. In 2018, just over 200 submissions were received while only two issues were published that year. In 2019, we received 272 submissions, and in 2020, we expect 400 submissions or more (!). The acceptance rate for papers submitted to JACCP remains at about 40%, and our turnaround time from submission to final decision is a highly competitive 26 days. We will begin publishing monthly issues in January 2021. Our first themed issue on clinical pharmacy practice in community settings was published in August 2019. Our second themed issue, “Clinical Pharmacy Practice Around the World,” with Guest Editors Sonak D. Pastakia, Pharm.D., FCCP (Purdue University) and Alan H. Lau, Pharm.D., FCCP (University of Illinois at Chicago), was a great success and was published this year in August. Our third themed issue, “Clinical Pharmacy Education and Training,” edited by Amy L. Seybert, Pharm.D., FCCP (University of Pittsburgh) and Stuart T. Haines, Pharm.D., FCCP (University of Mississippi), received over 75 submissions and will appear early in 2021. Our next themed issue, “Clinical Pharmacy Services Provided by Telehealth” with Guest Editors Melissa Badowski, Pharm.D., FCCP (University of Illinois at Chicago) and M. Shawn McFarland, Pharm.D., FCCP (Veterans Health Administration), is now calling for papers and will appear in the summer of 2021.

One important way of gauging interest in the content published by JACCP is the number of downloads from the Wiley website, where our papers appear ahead of print and then in a formal online issue. JACCP manuscripts were downloaded 91,000 times in 2019, with 40% of these downloads from outside the United States.

I am grateful to the clinical pharmacy scientists who have submitted their work to us, to our associate editors and editorial board, and to the selfless reviewers who help us determine the quality of the work. We have added five new clinical pharmacists to the JACCP editorial board: Erika J. Ernst (University of Iowa), Daniel S. Longyhore (Geisinger), Ashley H. Meredith (Purdue University), Kevin M. Sowinski (Purdue University), and Paul M. Stranges (University of Illinois at Chicago). Three individuals have been recognized as “outstanding reviewers” for JACCP and will be honored during the 2020 ACCP Annual Meeting: Dave L. Dixon (Virginia Commonwealth University), Alan Gross (University of Illinois at Chicago), and Monica L. Miller (Purdue University). Finally, I have selected two exemplary manuscripts for the 2020 Editor’s Choice Award:

Both manuscripts are extremely well done and interesting … and are free to download through November 30, 2020.

Let me end by thanking all the clinical pharmacists who submitted papers to JACCP (if it wasn’t accepted, keep trying – my own papers have been rejected everywhere), the associate editors, the editorial board, and the reviewers who make sure the quality of our papers is top-notch.
