Adult Medicine PRN

Introduction

The ACCP Adult Medicine PRN is one of the largest and most diverse PRNs, encompassing pharmacists who practice in inpatient and outpatient settings, academia, and the pharmaceutical industry. The Adult Medicine PRN consists of practitioners, residents, and students who share an interest in shaping the practice of adult medicine through research and practice.

PRN members are looking forward to the 2016 ACCP Annual Meeting in Hollywood, Florida. We encourage everyone to attend the Adult Medicine PRN focus session on Monday, October 24, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m., titled “Update to the Management of Acute Bacterial Skin and Skin Structure Infections: What Is the Utility of the New Agents?” The PRN is expecting a great turnout for its Adult Medicine PRN business and networking meeting, also on Monday, October 24, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the PRN’s activities over the past year, celebrate the PRN members’ accomplishments, and find out how you can become more involved in the PRN’s various committees.

Adult Medicine PRN members are very active within the PRN and ACCP, especially with working on one of its many PRN committees. Members appreciate all of its members’ hard work and accomplishments. The Archives Committee has been revising online content for its members. The Training/Travel and Nominations Committee has been reviewing applications and deciding on awards to be awarded at the 2016 ACCP Annual Meeting. The Newsletter Committee has been creating the biannual newsletter for PRN members. The Programming Committee has been developing content for the upcoming 2016 ACCP Annual Meeting. The newly created Research Committee has been developing a research project in conjunction with the ACCP Research Institute (RI). This is one of the first collaborations between the RI and a PRN; the committee is currently creating the electronic platform for this survey study. Members look forward to seeing the results from this research project and to future research partnerships with the ACCP RI.

Clinical Administration PRN

Introduction

The Clinical Administration PRN will provide an educational focus session on Monday afternoon, October 24, at the 2016 Annual Meeting focused on integrating an established performance improvement method for accelerating change in health care systems using examples such as performing medication reconciliation, granting clinical dosing authorities to pharmacists, and engaging patients in postdischarge comprehensive medication reviews. The PRN’s membership has grown to over 500 members since beginning in 2001. Its vision is to serve the needs of directors, clinical managers, and practitioners from inpatient and outpatient practice sites, including IT and academia. This growth in membership reflects the increasing interest in leadership within health systems and health care organizations.

The PRN has active student and resident members who host numerous educational webinars throughout the year on leadership and management topics of interest, especially appealing to those interested in health-system administration. Travel scholarships to the Annual Meeting are awarded to students and residents who are PRN members and who present their research projects at the PRN’s business meeting.

The PRN published an online newsletter with more details in early September 2016.

Infectious Diseases PRN

Introduction

The Infectious Diseases PRN (ID PRN) is one of the largest PRNs, with just more than 2300 members, over one-third of whom are residents and students. The ID PRN has four active committees (Programming, Nominations, Awards, and Publications), which work diligently to support and encourage membership involvement through meeting schedules, development of new awards and recognition categories for the PRN’s members, and development of a PRN newsletter. The ID PRN continues to support research and scholarly activity, with consistent donations to the Frontiers Fund, and supporting members with scholarships to the Focused Investigator Training (FIT) and/or the Mentored Research Investigator Training (MeRIT). At the October 2016 ACCP Annual Meeting, the ID PRN will continue to award Outstanding Trainee awards to two students and two residents. This will also be the second year that the ID PRN recognizes its members’ accomplishments with the awarding of the Clinical Practice Award.

The ID PRN continues to have a robust Twitter presence (@accpinfdprn, #IDPRN), with over 700 followers. The PRN has held two Twitter chats, one “Ask the Experts” session, which allowed users to bounce ideas and clinical scenarios off each other, and the other titled “ID Post-Graduate Training” with a focus on advice for students and residents interested in residency and fellowship.

Grants

  • Nita Limdi: Patient-Oriented Research in Personalized Antithrombotic Therapy. Limdi NA (PI). Funded by NHLBI. Clinical, genetic, and environmental factors that predict individual variability in antithrombotic response can help identify patients who could benefit or be harmed by these drugs. Integration of these predictors into clinical decision-making requires a paradigm shift based on evidence of their benefit-risk (clinical utility) and value (cost-effectiveness). To facilitate this paradigm shift, we propose to incorporate genetic information with environmental and clinical predictors to help develop patient-focused and population-based preventive and guidelines for “Personalized Antithrombotic Therapy (PAT).”
  • Tran Tran (PI): Funded by NACDS Foundation. This project will address the ongoing opioid crisis by infusing comprehensive educational programming into the student curriculum through the incorporation of a patient-centered education model and state-of-the art clinical simulation center to promote better pain management, detection of opioid misuse and treatment of overdose.

New ACCP Fellows

  • Nita Limdi: Fellow of the American Heart Association

Other Notable Achievements

  • Nita Limdi: Became a 2016–2017 Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Fellow. This is an intensive 1-year fellowship of leadership training with extensive coaching, networking and mentoring opportunities aimed at expanding the national pool of qualified women candidates for leadership in academic medicine.
  • Wendy St. Peter and Harold Manley are members of a Kidney Care Quality Alliance (KCQA) Measure Feasibility and Testing Workgroup that met regularly in fall 2015 and winter 2016. The workgroup recommended a new quality measure on Medication Reconciliation for patients receiving care at dialysis facilities. The National Quality Forum (NQF) Patient Safety Standing Committee recently voted to recommend the measure for endorsement. The NQF staff will prepare a report for public comment. After receiving public input, the measure will be voted on by NQF members. If recommended, the next step is endorsement and ratification by the Consensus Standards Committee/NQF Board. We will not know for sure until late in the year whether we’ll have a new quality measure on this, but this was good news!

Pediatrics PRN

Introduction

This has been a busy spring and summer for the PRN membership, as the PRN has several new services and many member accomplishments. The PRN is excited to announce the results of its PRN officer election. Rebecca Pettit is the president-elect, and Jennifer Hamner is the new secretary/treasurer. Kalen Manasco will transition to the chair position, and the PRN looks forward to another great year. The PRN also wants to say a big thank-you to its secretary/treasurer, Jim Thigpen, for his service as the PRN’s secretary/treasurer. The PRN currently has 1074 members, 461 of whom are fellows, residents, or students. This is an increase in trainee memberships, so the PRN looks forward to continuing this growth and future of pediatric pharmacy. The PRN wishes to continue its growth and can do this best by serving its members and providing opportunities, outlined below, for each of you to get involved.

The Research Committee, led by Bob John and Hanna Phan, has been working with the ACCP Research Institute to develop the Pediatrics PRN’s first PBRN project, thanks to Pediatrics PRN member Varsha Mehta. This project will describe the degree to which pediatric anticoagulation practices vary in the United States and the factors influencing potential variation. Before developing the study protocol, the PBRN will first conduct a preparatory-to-research activity to demonstrate whether the patient-level data needed for this study can be collected within the network. To complete this, an invitation was sent out to the PRN membership, seeking up to 10 clinical pharmacists who are willing to participate in this preparatory-to-research activity. Interested individuals must be members of the ACCP Pediatrics PRN and active team members of the inpatient anticoagulation team at their institutions and must agree to conduct a retrospective chart review of 10 pediatric patients who received enoxaparin in the treatment of DVT within their respective inpatient pediatric settings. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail the PBRN’s project coordinator, Jessie Culley ([email protected]), or call (913) 492-3311. In addition to project development, the committee is developing a new poster rounds program for new practitioners, residents, and students during the 2016 Annual Meeting. This program will help them further develop skills in research development and evaluation. Watch for opportunities to serve as a poster rounds mentor in the PRN e-mail list; this will be a great way to serve and help foster future pediatric pharmacists.

The Travel Award Committee, under the direction of Elizabeth Farrington, is currently reviewing the student and resident travel awards. In addition, committee members will brainstorm on how to increase the number of applicants. Find the committee at the Annual Meeting if you have some great ideas.

The Nominations Committee successfully worked with the ACCP staff to finalize the officer nomination and election process for 2017–2018. In addition to this, the committee has been working on the criteria for two new awards for Pediatrics PRN members, beginning in 2017. Specific details about these awards will be discussed with the membership at the Annual Meeting.

The Social Media Committee is one of the PRN’s most active committees, and it needs a dynamic team to match. If you are interested in keeping the PRN’s membership up to date and increasing its web presence, contact Chephra McKee ([email protected]); she will transition to chair of the committee this fall. Make sure to follow the PRN on Twitter (@accppediprn) and Facebook. Also, be looking for more updates to the PRN’s website.

The Education Committee created and delivered the first Pediatrics PRN journal club this past May, with over 80 attendees. Drs. Zachary Thompson and Kelsey Fink from Kentucky Children’s Hospital and Hillcrest Hospital, respectively, were the first presenters of this annual webinar. In addition, the committee has been working toward its Pediatrics PRN focus session for the 2016 ACCP Annual Meeting. This year’s session is titled “Best Practices for Pharmacokinetics and Pediatric Dosing Strategies” with two interactive presentations: “Ahead of the Curve! Optimizing Vancomycin Dosing with Pharmacokinetic Modeling” and “Tipping the Scales: Pediatric Obesity and Its Implications for Drug Dosing.”

PRN members look forward to the continued growth of the PRN’s committees and membership and hope to see many of you at the Annual Meeting!

Perioperative Care PRN

Introduction

The Perioperative Care PRN was established in October 2014 to provide education and resources related to the overall treatment of perioperative patients, address the regulatory requirements imposed by accrediting bodies, and provide a place for members to discuss complicated perioperative patients and seek input and recommendations on care.

The ACCP Perioperative Care PRN strives to address common concerns associated with pre-, inter-, and postoperative phases of care as they relate to patient-specific parameters (age, sex, and comorbid conditions) and medical severity. The scope of this network includes addressing underlying disease processes and progression, successfully managing sedation and pain, identifying alterations in drug disposition (administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion), and using evidence-based medicine to evaluate and minimize surgical complications. The goal of this network is to incorporate interdisciplinary collaboration through academia, research, and practice development while ensuring the safe and effective perioperative management of all patient populations.

The ACCP Perioperative Care PRN encourages members to interact through the e-mail list and the ACCP Perioperative Care PRN Facebook group available at www.facebook.com/#!/groups/742181659164330/. The Perioperative Care PRN will host the PRN’s business meeting on Monday, October 24, and will cohost a joint focus session with the Pain and Palliative Care PRN titled “Clinical Pearls: Best Practices in Perioperative Multimodal Pain Management” on Tuesday, October 25, at the 2016 ACCP Annual Meeting in Hollywood, Florida. The general goals of the symposium are to provide a series of clinical pearls addressing areas of controversy or limited clinical information related to multimodality pain management in the perioperative period. The topics included will address the controversy of efficacy and cost of intravenous acetaminophen, the role of ketamine as a potential first-line perioperative analgesic, and the role and timing of adjunctive therapy with gabapentinoids or topical analgesic/anesthetic agents. This program will use both didactic teaching and case studies to educate the audience. All ACCP members are encouraged to join PRN members at the business meeting and focus session in Hollywood, Florida.
