The Applied Mental Health Pharmacotherapy Certificate Program is an interactive, practice-based program designed to help clinical pharmacists develop skills in providing appropriate pharmaceutical care to persons living with mental illnesses (MIs) and substance use disorders (SUDs), particularly when receiving care in non-psychiatric clinical settings.

  Syllabus

Program Objectives:

  1. Describe the appropriate use of medications utilized in the treatment of MIs and SUDs, including medication selection and dosing, monitoring, and recognition and mitigation of adverse events.
  2. Apply medication and illness knowledge with patient-specific factors to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for persons living with MIs and SUDs, concurrently with other illnesses and treatments.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate communication methods when providing care to persons with MIs and SUDs, including stigma-free language and methods of improving treatment adherence.
  4. Utilize appropriate methods of patient assessment for initial screening and evaluation through ongoing treatment of MIs and SUDs, including adverse events.

Requisites:

Participants must complete:

  • the asynchronous online portions of the program consist of reviewing recorded content, completing online exercises and provided cases, and responding to questions and prompts provided on the program discussion board.  Participants should expect to spend 0.5-1.5 hours (depending on the module being completed that week) completing these activities during the program.
  • the live portion of the program, delivered virtually, will include 4.5-6.0 hours (approximately 1.5-2.0 hours every 4 weeks) of interactive presentations, case-based learning activities, and participant discussions.

Technical Requirements:

A computer with a high-speed internet connection and audio is necessary.  A webcam is preferred but not required.  An up-to-date internet browser (e.g., Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox) and Zoom conferencing software are required to participate in Zoom sessions.

Instructional Design

A combination of online (asynchronous) and live (virtual, synchronous) activities will encourage participants to engage in both self-directed learning as well as interact with instructors and peers for an enhanced educational experience. The online content will be accessible through your ACCP account. The live content will be delivered via Zoom at various times throughout the course. The curricular basis for the program, length of modules (contact hours), and practice opportunities are outlined in the schedule.

Faculty Expertise

Program faculty, led by Program Director Richard Silvia, developed the curriculum to address program outcomes. Faculty divided content presentations according to their respective areas of expertise/practice. Presentation platforms, practice opportunities, assessments, and feedback were all developed by the faculty to maximize convenience of flipped-classroom teaching and live team-based learning.

Guest faculty with specific expertise will contribute to the program with case presentations and discussion facilitation.

The means of communication for this program will be via the learning management system, ACCP programming page (for pre-recorded modules) or Zoom (for live meeting sessions). Throughout the entire program, the program faculty are available online discussion board to answer questions and provide feedback.

Schedule of Review

Content and learning materials will be reviewed prior to and after each offering of the activity.

Activity Evaluation

Electronic program evaluations will be performed at the conclusion of the program and required prior to issuing certificates and CPE.

Participant Evaluation

To receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a certificate upon completion of the program, participants must complete the following:

Pre-Recorded Lectures: Watch the recorded lectures for each week’s required module and your selected elective modules and respond to the prompts for any embedded case discussions, application questions, or other application exercises.

Recorded Podcasts: Listen to any podcast recordings for modules incorporating them.

Live Sessions: Attend three live virtual case discussions and review sessions via Zoom (see schedule below). 

Quizzes: Complete online questions for the specified required modules included on that quiz.  Quizzes take place every 4 weeks during the program, covering the required modules from the previous 3 weeks.  Each quiz is due at the end of the week in which it is released. (Note: Each module/week runs from Wednesday through Tuesday.)  For elective modules, quizzes must be completed by September 30, 2026. Participants must receive 70% or better on each of the quizzes.

ACCP Communities Platform: Participate in the online discussion board forum with access to faculty and peers for programming and clinical exchanges.

Evaluations: Complete the individual and overall session evaluations PRIOR to September 30, 2026.

CPE Credit

Successful completion of all of the requisites no later than September 30, 2026 will provide 13.5 contact hours of practice-based continuing pharmacy education and a certificate to place in one’s workplace.

To achieve the stated program outcomes the activity is designed to be completed in its entirety. No continuing education credit will be given for partial completion of the activity.

Required activity and participant information will be submitted online via CPE Monitor®.
