Abstract
Introduction: The National Centralized Drug Procurement policy was initiated in mainland China in April 2019, encompassing Oxaliplatin among the procured medications. Public medical institutions were mandated to engage in national centralized drug procurement and prioritize the utilization of drugs procured through the national centralized procurement based on clinical needs.
Research Question or Hypothesis: How has the policy affected the cost of oxaliplatin and the incidence of adverse drug reactions?
Study Design: A single centre, prospective study
Methods: An active monitoring approach was employed to collect adverse drug reaction reports of oxaliplatin in a major medical institution in China from October 2022 to September 2023. Oxaliplatin drugs were divided into two groups: those procured through centralized procurement (CP) and those obtained via non-centralized procurement (NCP). The incidence of adverse drug reaction and drug cost between CP and NCP were analyzed.
Results: A total of 112 adverse drug reaction reports related to oxaliplatin injection were identified. No significant difference in adverse reaction incidence (1.61% vs 1.76%) was observed between CP and NCP (P > 0.05). However, a substantial price disparity was noted between CP and NCP (?91.8/50mg vs?2061.22/50mg). Following the widespread adoption of centralized procurement of oxaliplatin, a significant reduction (?42614309.96) in drug procurement cost was observed.
Conclusion: The implementation of the National Centralized Drug Procurement policy led to a significant reduction in oxaliplatin cost, however, there was no increase in adverse drug reactions. The findings provided evidence for optimizing the choose of oxaliplatin and allocating medical resources in China.
